YMMV / Kirby (Light Novel)

Go To

  • Broken Base:
    • The sixth novel, "Kirby's Labyrinth Rescue!" Some appreciate it as it started the series' shift towards more adventurous and darker stories that expand on the concepts of the modern games as well as give Taranza some closure with Sectonia and the Dimension Mirror, while others think that it's a pretty feeble first attempt at a serious Kirby novel, with pacing issues, inserting too many elements from radically different games and quite a few concepts not reaching their full potential (such as the Mirror World barely getting any attention and serving more as a backdrop for the novel's events, rather than being fleshed out as a proper and interesting location).
    • The seventh novel, "Kirby and the Great Planet Robobot Adventure". Some like it for Director Kane, and the expansion with Haltmann, like how his actions may have been influenced by Star Dream. Others also aren't the biggest fan of it, especially with how there are only eight chapters, not to mention how Haltmann comes Back from the Dead, which they feel lessens the impact.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Papi. He only appeared on one novel, but he became popular with fans for being adorable, and averting Bitch in Sheep's Clothing.
  • Fanon: Despite being a normal butterfly who happens to be in the underworld, there are some fanart that depicts Papi with a puffball form akin to Morpho Knight's, thanks to the latter's butterfly motif.
  • Friendly Fandoms: The Pokespe fandom. Both of them are obscure adaptations of a popular Nintendo franchise, and are frequently seen better than their anime counterparts.
  • Funny Moments:
    • Kirby and the Dangerous Gourmet Mansion!? has several, given its Lighter and Softer tone from the video games.
      • In the first chapter, Kirby isn't listening to anything Waddle Dee has to say until he says the name "Madame Parfaitsky". But since "Parfaitsky" sounds like "I like parfait" in Japanese, Kirby mishears and starts asking what kind of parfait Waddle Dee likes.
      • King Dedede considers wearing several tacky outfits to Parfaitsky's birthday party, including a rainbow-colored sequined suit (which he had custom-made) and a morphsuit covered in gigantic feathers. When he shows off the latter, Waddle Dee is so horrified that he's at a loss for words, so Dedede hits him with this gem of a line:
King Dedede: What’s wrong? Are you dumbstruck by its incredible sexiness?
      • Chapter 2 starts with Dedede spying on Kirby through a pair of binoculars. When he sees Kirby stirring something in a mixing bowl, he concludes that the pink puff is making a bomb so he can blow up Castle Dedede.
      • Later in Chapter 2, King Dedede is so furious about not receiving an invitation to Madame Parfaitsky's party that he blames the mailmen, who he claims are all conspiring with Kirby against him.
Dedede: Those dang postmen are joinin’ forces with Kirby and settin’ me up for a fall, no doubt! Gosh dang it, this means WAR!
      • In Chapter 4, Meta Knight has Kirby and King Dedede settle who will be his dance partner for Parfaitsky's party with a game of rock-paper scissors. Unfortunately, they have other plans — Dedede is secretly hiding his hammer behind his back, and Kirby is positioning himself to suck Dedede up.
      • The fact that King Dedede just happens to have a frilly pink dress in his closet.
      • The entire party scene from Chapter 5 is pure Cringe Comedy. The other guests see Meta Knight's dance partner, "Dedeby", and start to wonder if she's his lover. Even Parfaitsky ships it.
Meta Knight: ...Just now, I have experienced the greatest humiliation of my life...
      • At the end, Kirby starts singing whatever he can think of, much to everyone's agony. Madame Parfaitsky has it worse, since she can't even cover her ears.
    • In Kirby Star Allies: The Universe is in a Big Pinch?!, when Kirby summons Meta Knight using the Dream Palace, he is holding a mug. It was tea time, as the narration states.
  • Growing the Beard: While the first few novels are far from being bad, they aren't anything special either and feel like typical kid-friendly books, with the main draw being hilarious character interactions. Somewhere around books six and seven (those being "Kirby's Labyrinth Rescue!" and "Kirby and the Great Planet Robobot Adventure") is where it starts coming into its own, ditching its slice-of-life elements and focusing more on grand adventures and world-building akin to the games.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • In the sixth novel, the work that Claycia was focusing so much on was actually for Elline. Although Kirby and the others can't really understand her work, it moves Elline deeply.
  • Ho Yay: Kirby and Waddle Dee, full stop. Kirby and Waddle Dee are very close, to the point of even casually sleeping together. They literally can't live without each other.
    • There's also the fact that Kirby and Waddle Dee have to keep their friendship a secret from Dedede, who gets angry as soon as he suspects the two are doing something together behind his back, which mirrors a disapproving parent looking down on such a relationship.
  • Moe: Waddle Dee, especially from his friendship with Kirby.
  • Moment of Awesome:
    • Near the end of the fourth novel, Meta Knight is almost brainwashed by the Malice Stone, but is able to resist it to a degree. He then destroys the stone with all his will and strength put in.
    • In the eighth novel, King Dedede willing to go toe-to-toe with a frustrated Meta Knight to protect Kirby and giving him a challenging fight.
    • Similarly, in the eighth novel, Meta Knight comes to believe that his men will give him strength, which allows him to finally defeat Galacta Knight.
    • In the fifteenth novel, Galacta Knight returns and this time, four Kirbys work together to take him down.
  • Nausea Fuel: The "cake" Kirby cooks in Kirby and the Dangerous Gourmet Mansion!? is a Cordon Bleugh Chef's worst nightmare. The ingredients list starts out normal, but then Kirby reveals he put things like soy sauce, cayenne pepper, sesame oil, and natto in it. For the frosting, he adds to the grossness with cream and strawberry jam... mixed with, among other things, sausage and slices of tuna. Just imagining what this concoction tastes like will make anyone sick to their stomach.
  • Spoiled by the Format: In "Kirby and the Dangerous Gourmet Mansion!?", it's fairly obvious that there's something wrong with Madame Parfaitsky because the table of contents lists a chapter called "The Real Madame Parfaitsky". Without that, you'd have no reason to suspect her of a thing, although she does act like she's hiding something beforehand.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • At the end of the fourth novel, we get the truth that Merengue XIII did know that Marona was pushing herself to keep her facade, and didn't want to bother her about it. The two finally patch things up with tears.
    • In the sixth novel, Taranza is reluctant to let go of the mirror, in hopes that Sectonia is inside the mirror. Kirby then wonders if Sectonia indeed was in the mirror, and possibly was the one who called them here.
    • In the ninth novel, Kirby falls into despair after the dimensional portal closes before he could get in, now fully unable to return home. Thankfully subverted shortly afterwards, as he does find himself back in Dream Land not long afterwards.
