- Harsher in Hindsight: It's unsettling how many secondary, supporting, and minor characters smoke in this series, given that Sue Grafton had died of oesophageal cancer from being a smoker herself.
- Moral Event Horizon: Cappi in "V" is for Vengeance crosses it when he has a trio of goons throw Phillip off the top of a parking garage over a gambling debt. Typical mob behavior, but what makes this action a MEH is that Phillip had just given his brother, Dante, his $30,000 car (the debt was $26,000, including expenses), hoping that would satisfy the debt. Cappi took his keys; did he have to kill him, too? This contrasts with his own brother, who actually considered the debt settled after agreeing to take the car; Cappi's action also constitutes a double-cross.
- Nausea Fuel: Chapter 20 of B is For Burglar, when Kinsey investigates a suspect's abandoned apartment. What she finds inside is disgusting. It's advised the reader not be eating anything when they reach that part of the book.
