- Questionable Casting: Disney's new CEO at the time, Michael Eisner, didn't particularly care for this movie hiring Richard Gere for the role of David. He snarked, "I don't see David in a dress." He may have had a point when Gere got a Razzie nomination for the role. Director Bruce Beresford also exhibited regret for the casting.
- Retroactive Recognition: Doeg is played by Christopher Malcolm, who would later be best known for playing Justin in Absolutely Fabulous.
- Vanilla Protagonist: In part due to the source material and the stuff they chose to focus on. Many reviewers found Edward Woodward's Saul and the drama around him and his family more compelling than both the boy and adult i.e. Richard Gere's David and his family.
