YMMV / Joji

Go To

  • Awesome Music:
Excuse me for my plastic taste
Let this moment go to waste
    • "BESIDJU" is what happens when Joji collaborates with well-known lo-fi artist Shamana. Spoiler alert: it's absolutely beautiful.
    • "i don't want to waste my time", not only Joji's first "single" on a label (88Rising), but it sounds gorgeous.
    • "Will He", the first single off of his EP In Tongues, combines heavenly, choir-like vocals, low but powerful bass hits and depressing but romantic lyrics. It's gorgeous.
    • "SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK". The acoustic version is no slouch either.
    • "Run" is an incredible power ballad with haunting vocals and a throbbing bass. Props goes to the guitar solo at the end.
    • "Gimme Love". Special mention goes to the second half.
  • Broken Base: There's a huge division over which version of Joji's music is better: the singles versions (consisting of the Filthy Frank era songs up to before In Tongues) or the newer stuff (In Tongues up to BALLADS1 and Nectar). There is no middle ground either, so good luck trying to argue with fans over which style of Joji's music is better.
  • Creator Worship: Just go to any video with Joji or a Joji song and most of the comments will be this.
  • Fandom-Enraging Misconception: A minor one, but calling Joji (the creator) Filthy Frank when out he's out of character can make some fans unpleased.
  • Friendly Fandoms:
    • With any other fans from other 88rising artists, most prominently Rich Brian.
    • With some Filthy Frank fans, naturally.
    • Also with fans of other indie lo-fi artists, such as Clairo or Tomppabeats.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: If his Spotify statistics are anything to go by, he's very popular in the Philippines and Indonesia.
  • Funny Moments: Joji clumsily rollerskating around the streets of New York while wearing a tuxedo and holding a bouqet of flowers in the music video for "CAN'T GET OVER YOU", especially the blooper reels that show he's having a lot of fun with it. It's somewhat reminiscent of his old Filthy Frank antics.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • Meta example: Joji deciding to continue making music under his name and acknowledging that his screw ups over the Streisand Effect, but stating his reaction was just feeling he had no control over his identity/image as not just a comedian, but growing musician. He admits he'll take what the internet throws at him and just wants his audience and himself to be happy. That alone is awesome.
Joji: It's important to have a fanbase that is that involved with you. [Aside Glance] And I respect that. Thank you.
      • Adding to that: Joji also admits that the reason he dropped the more serious music early on was because he felt the fanbase wasn't gonna accept it (which a Vocal Minority did unfortunately), but sees that now everyone loves the serious stuff and has been more confidence with releasing the content he loves, also helped with his more openness with his fans, something he had long avoided beforehand.
    • After Joji announced the end of Filthy Frank, all the fans gladly accepted his decision and are happy to see him going in the direction he loves. That's saying a lot considering what the fandom accidentally did beforehand.
    • The ending of the "Walking" music video has Jackson Wang (who's piloting a Humongous Mecha) looking down on Lobster Monster Joji after defeating him and starts to take pity when he sees the civilians pointing and laughing at the monster and remembers being in a similar position as a kid, so he decides to help Joji up instead and give him a hug. Joji initially looks around in awkward confusion, but decides to just close his eyes and smile in the end. Then there's him and Jackson goofing around in their costumes which is utterly adorable.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In 2018, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon played "Meme Machine" from Pink Season. Two years later, Joji would make "Run"'s TV debut on the very same show.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: If he's in a video, even if just for a bit, expect it to have a lot of people commenting about him, videos with him tend to get pretty popular too.

  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The preview video for "window" is pretty creepy.
    • The music video for Joji's song "Will He" from In Tongues is surreal and horrifying. Joji in a bathtub filled with blood, a girl with an arrow in her head, a person wearing a panda bear suit throughout the video, and shots of Joji with a blood stained shirt. What. It makes the surreal music videos for Pink Guy look tame, especially considering the song is a Tear Jerker.
    • The music video for "Slow Dancing In The Dark", cuts back and forth from a depressed Joji smoking in a tuxedo in a phone booth to him being revealed to be a satyr stumbling around a dark city with an arrow in his back, explicitly bleeding out from it. The video ends with him succumbing to his wound and dying in a pool of his own blood on an illuminated floor. Before that, a shot of his cold, lifeless bloodied face with his eyes wide open is shown. Damn, Joji. What the fuck was all that about?
    • The first half of the video of "Gimme Love" is a rapid-fire montage depicting Joji as some kind of famous scientist, with some segments showing his actual work... some of which involve sudden spurts of blood and highly visible corpses and parts thereof. Due to the fast pace and turbulent tone of the video, it's difficult to parse any context or reasoning to explain what just happened, making it almost Jump Scare-esque in its execution despite the music itself being upbeat.
    • While nothing too disturbing, the video for "Your Man" is quite eerie, featuring a strange astronaut who crashed into Death Valley, before shakily getting up and begins jerkily stumbling and dancing around, appearing in several abandoned areas including a greenhouse, a bar, a cafeteria, and a small house out in the desert, all of which are dimly lit, with the exception of random flashes of strobelights and a red light in the kitchen. Note that throughout the video, everywhere the astronaut is is completely abandoned, implying humanity has either died off or disappeared. At the end, back in the desert, the astronaut removes his helmet and face cover, revealing him as a bald humanoid alien who silently looks up into the sky, revealing an entire barrage of similar meteorites falling. It's unclear whether George himself plays the alien astronaut or how it ties in to the vague arc set by his videos, and that makes it all the more unsettling.
  • Signature Song: "you suck charlie", "i don't wanna waste my time" and especially "medicine" for older fans of Joji's content. In regards to his new content, "SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK" seems to be a good contender.
