- Adorkable: Evelyn, Mike and Mara take a seat back in this to Eliza, who is adorable, socially awkward and very endearing.
- Crosses the Line Twice: Normally, you wouldn't make jokes about orphanhood but Matthew makes it work when he tells it at the expense of Mason West, suggesting that he's a Self-Made Orphan.
- Escapist Character: Eliza Hansen, Teen Genius who's also a Gadgeteer Genius.
- Iron Woobie: Mara. Dear god, the poor girl.
- Jerkass Woobie: Evelyn, even though she Took a Level in Jerkass here, you'll wind feeling sorry for her at one point or another.
- Moral Event Horizon: While he was undeniably unsympathetic already, showing no concern and even delighting in what could've been Mara's untimely death definitely marks Jack here.
- Love to Hate: Mason is unapologetic, manipulative and self-centered, making him quite efficient as a villain.
- Surprisingly Improved Sequel: While the original was decent, the sequel is longer, bigger and more complex.
- The Woobie: Eliza. She's a jovial, friendly and smart girl but she's also hiding insecurities due to her missing father and desire to have friends. She is very prone to tears.
