YMMV / Intertwined

Go To

  • Adorkable: Mara, Mike and Evelyn are made of this.
  • Accidental Innuendo:
Mike: (To Matt) I guess I can leave you and your little boyfriend [Evan] to enjoy using your pens.
  • Angst? What Angst?: One can look at the ending and think this, given that a bunch of teens just went through a nightmare yet they barely look traumatized. The sequel subverts this by showing that they hide it deep down.
  • Cry for the Devil: Jordan's Driven to Suicide death can make you feel sad for her.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Dexter makes a Your Mom joke early on at Evelyn's expense. While not many might agree that it was funny then, certainly nobody will find it funny after learning that Evelyn's mother is dead a few chapters later.
    • This also applies to Jordan and why she hates boys. She reveals in the end that she had abusive relationships with boys before. Plural. The harshness doubles in the sequel when we actually meet one of those boys and see how horrible he really is.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: One of Watermelon's original characters is called Jordan Fisher (a girl). Both Watermelon and Houssem didn't realize that she shared her name with actor Jordan Fisher who would end up starring in Dear Evan Hansen as the titular character...and DEH was one of the musicals that they based Intertwined on.
  • Ho Yay: Mike generates quite a few of these moments. His jealousy over Matt hanging out with another boy, especially.
  • Jerkass Woobie: A bunch of characters can fall into this:
    • Asher might've been possessive and aggressive but the events of the story revealed what a broken kid he is.
    • Matt is the meanest of the boys and he can be a jerk. It's strongly hinted that this is just a mask for his insecurities and self-hatred.
    • The three bullies. They care about each other and are horrified when a murderer shows up.
    • Jordan might just be the biggest candidate for this despite being the Big Bad of the story.
  • Portmanteau Couple Name: There's Mikara (Mike/Mara) and Mattlyn (Matt/Evelyn). They've been mentioned by the creators and even name-dropped In-Universe.
  • The Producer Thinks of Everything: The entirety of the book was planned beforehand, and that extends to several plot points in the sequel that tie the two books together.
  • Stoic Woobie: Matt's mask doesn't crack until the very end, and what a tragedy that is.
  • The Woobie:
    • Evelyn, after the reveal that she unintentionally caused Jordan to do what she did, and blames herself for it. Also, after Matt dumps her unexpectedly.
    • Mara, many times. With the implications of her horrible home life, things get much and much worse for her.
    • Mike is not a major candidate but still applies, since he gets played like a fiddle by bullies, gets yelled at by his best friend and gets shot trying to make sure his friends stay safe. Thankfully he survives.
