YMMV / Interspecies Reviewers

  • Adaptation Displacement: More than a few viewers make it clear from their comments about the anime that they don't know it's based on a manga, and some of those that do are unaware that not only is the manga licensed in North America, but two volumes had been released in English by the time the first episode of the anime aired.
  • Adorkable:
    • Crim is an adorable sweetheart who often feels completely out of place among his far more crass and perverted companions. He's visibly embarrassed both by his unnaturally large Gag Penis and other people's reactions to hearing about it, he's way more flustered by flirtatious women, and he was the only one of the Reviewers who found any value in something as pedestrian as having pretty eyes, causing him to be the only Reviewer to get anything out of the eye size of his cyclops succu-girl partner... at least until his succu-girl had him engage in some really bizarre eye-based foreplay that completely weirded him out.
    • Togue the minotaur has absolutely terrible acting skills, despite trying her best to put on an enjoyable performance for Kanchal, but her notably sincere effort, especially in her personal Darkness limelight story, makes her come off as quite endearing.
  • Crosses the Line Twice:
    • The entire series. The premise revolves around a group of guys questing to find out which type of monster girl is the best by having sex with them and then posting the reviews at the local tavern. In just the first episode of the anime, there's Naughty Tentacles, a Hermaphrodite angel boy and full frontal nudity including visible genitalia on the girls in the uncensored version. Furthermore, the series is actually a Shōnen, not a seinen or hentai.
    • Episode 3 of the anime adaptation takes this to a new level with The Genderswap Inn, with "Chalmy" getting dommed by Piltia with toys, "Zelzel" being restrained and done by a slime girl, "Fem-Stunk" getting shown how women enjoy it by a 659-year-old elf woman, note  and "Clitorim" getting a full scene with the hyena girl, complete with her humping him onscreen. It's sufficiently ero enough that the censored version straight-up blacks out several entire scenes.
    • The manga only chapter 24 beats all of the above by a long shot. The scene opens with the gang visiting the Aquari-Harem, which specializes in soul transfer and has all of the Reviewers placed inside the bodies of various sea creatures to have sex for the next few hours. Stunk ends up in the body of a snail and immediately goes for a female snail nearby that turns out to be the biological daughter of the snail he's possessing. What follows is essentially a snail on snail rape scene followed by Stunk musing about how he'll be spending the next few hours:
    • Volume 4, chapter 31 has the succubus film auction, and the last video viewed, the one of the golems at The Sex Marionette being prepped for the installation of their soft parts, gets rather graphic in terms of ribaldness. For one, the golem being modified is conscious, with her personality core installed and active. For a second point, she feels everything as they take a drill, and then a file, to her crotch (to hollow and smooth it out for the installation of the soft part), and her erotic reactions are very spectacular, especially when they start inserting and fitting the soft part in and she starts feeling sensations from that part as well; in-universe, the entire spectacle is so spicy that the auction price for this specific succubus film skyrockets after the viewing.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Aloe became extremely popular shortly after she was introduced, with her even winning a popularity poll and getting a 1/1 life-size statuette collectible of herself made.
  • Escapist Character: While any member of the main cast could count to an extent, Stunk is probably the best example due to being the sole human with (most likely) tastes similar to that of the readerbase. Not only does he get to have sex with dozens of super hot monster girls, he get paid good money to do it! Which he then promptly spends on sex with even more monster girls! Which he then gets paid even more money for!
  • Fanfic Fuel:
    • The backstories of the Reviewers are often explored in fanfiction, especially those of Stunk and Crim. Stunk is a masterful swordsman who is said to have been able to beat adults even at a young age and has mentioned a mysterious father that he is implied to have a strained relationship with and who also has a harem of his own. Crim is an angel who somehow cracked his halo and is stuck in the mortal world until it gets fixed. Since the anime has only adapted the first twenty or so chapters of the manga, the poor boy never even comes close to getting his halo fixed and much of his backstory goes unrevealed. As a result, many fans of the series will try and fill in the blanks themselves.
    • The group is mentioned to have saved the entire world offscreen in one of the later episodes of the anime. Naturally, fans have gone wild with theories and ideas of what might have happened and how they pulled it off.
    • It's shown near the end of the series that many other groups of reviewers have popped up since the gang began writing their initial reviews and have apparently visited brothels even the main cast haven't been to yet. This has led to plenty of viewers creating their own teams or even self-inserts and writing their own reviews via fanfiction.
    • The dearth of gay sex scenes in the anime and manga (with the only examples so far being some lesbian action in the Gender Bender episode and the anime-only succu-girl film) has gotten people from the slow but budding LGBT Fanbase try and make ones involving their own reviewers whether it's older characters or more femboys similar to Crim.
    • People have wondered if Crim had a sex life beforehand with other angels. Considering a lot of fans really want to see him interacting sexually with other males, they like to fill in the gaps. Additionally, they like having him go on more sexual adventures by himself when Stunk and the others are busy with their own, like the time he went to the magical slime shop.
    • The series makes occasional mention of there being incuboy options as well, meaning it's not just the guys and lesbians who get all the fun. Anybody wanting to take a stab at a Distaff Counterpart and see what boys of different species have to offer sexually are well supported.
  • Friendly Fandoms:
  • Ho Yay: There is a significant number of fans, both in the West and the East that want Crim to be sexed by Stunk and Zel. To the point that whenever Crim's sexual interest in men is brought up, the fans make a ruckus.

  • Mis-blamed: Yes, Funimation abruptly dropped the series early into broadcasting, which naturally resulted in a backlash, particularly from parts of the fandom that don't like Funimation to begin with. But there are indications that the studio didn't properly inform the licensors of how explicit the anime would get, being even Hotter and Sexier than the original manga, as the series was also dropped by two of its Japanese broadcasters and Amazon. The studio has a history of risqué works, but most agree this series takes it considerably further.
  • Moe: He may be just as involved in the sexual escapades as the other guys, but Crim is an absolutely adorable sweetheart. He's a kind and courteous gentleman that has never gotten legitimately angry, he's always loving and caring towards his sex partners, and he gets embarrassed incredibly easily, with him blushing or being shocked almost every chapter/episode.
  • Popular with Furries: Elza the hyena girl's resemblance to many Western furry characters was not lost on viewers. Which makes it unsurprising that she got fourth place in a popularity poll for the anime, only losing out to Crim, Meidri, and winner of the manga popularity poll Aloe.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: The opening theme sounds very similar to the Village People's "YMCA" and "In the Navy". Just listen to them played together. This also overlaps with Visual Pun in a meta-way: Both the manga and the anime adaptation are literally about people that live in a small village.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: Crim identifies as a boy, admittedly out of convenience, but looks very much like a girl. This is entirely justified though as he has both sets of genitalia, so his body is likely biologically designed to have an androgynous intersex appearance.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: Despite the series premise and content revolving a lot around sex, the manga is serialized in a shonen magazine. However, the original manga is nowhere near as explicit as the anime, which is much Hotter and Sexier.
  • The Woobie: The two small-eyed cyclops girls in chapter 10/episode 5. They're absolute bombshells by human standards, but their race considers a giant eye to be the most attractive feature a cyclops girl can have, with her curves barely mattering at all. The two have, as a result, spent their entire lives with such low self-esteem about their looks that they don't believe any man could ever find them beautiful, and are convinced Stunk and Zel are just being nice when they (truthfully) say they're gorgeous. Add in the fact that despite being convinced they're ugly, they're still working in the sex industry and barely getting any clients, suggesting they don't actually have any other career options available to them, and they're trapped in a career they don't enjoy that constantly drills into their heads that no man could ever want them. Give those poor girls a hug. Although one of them rated as high as #4 on the first popularity poll, to her own surprise.
