  • Complete Monster: Charles Bentley is a rich businessman who plans to use Dr. Biladeau's zombies for world domination, imprisoning Biladeau and threatening him with exposure should he leave his island. Posing as the native's tribal leader, he has innocent people sacrificed so that their corpses can be used for his zombie army. When Tom Harris starts figuring out his scheme, he has their plane and pilot blown up, one of his men forcibly converted into a zombie, and kidnaps Biladeau's daughter Jeannie to sacrifice her in order to prevent Biladeau from leaving the island.
  • Fridge Horror:
    • The prized pet poodles are never seen again once everyone in the group takes residence in the island's remote cabin. Then the island gets blown up at the end with everyone on it. Including those poor poodles.
    • The voodoo ritual sacrifices specifically require a virgin young woman to be sacrificed. Janine should've been safe once she lost her virginity to Tom. Unfortunately, Janine, along with Coral, still get kidnapped and bounded and gagged to be sacrificed. And that's where we figure out that it's personal once a non-virginal woman (or two) are about to be sacrificed. Just how many women (virgins or not) has Charles Bentley and the island natives sacrificed and killed over the years and how long have they been getting away with it?
  • Moral Event Horizon: A remorseful Dr. Biladeau believes he's already crossed it as he warns Tom and Janine that it is too late for him to leave the island with them as certain things have gotten out of hand. Such as his experiments with the zombies and Dr. Charles Bentley blackmailing him.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The opening scene depicting a young girl's seductive dance and trapped in a hypnotic state right before she is killed for the virgin ritual sacrifice, complete with the voodoo cultists screaming and the cutaway showing dark clouds and thunder and lightning crashing.
    • Tom and the fisherman being attacked by one of the island zombies, with Tom trapped and screaming as the poor fisherman is beheaded by the zombie's machete.
    • The idea that someone wants to murder your beloved offspring unless you continue to work for them.
    • Janine enjoying a playful innocent skinny dip in the island waters when she is ambushed by a zombie stalking her.
  • Values Dissonance: The scene where an angry jealous husband kicks his wife's behind and pushes her and shoves her away after catching her with Tom at the pool is all played for laughs. Such depiction of abuse wouldn't be approved in today's standards.
