YMMV / Hubie Halloween

Go To

  • Alternate Character Interpretation:
    • Was Hubie's mother really going to really kill Mike, the Henneseys and Peter or was trying to make it look she was going to kill them for all the abuse they had inflicted on her son to see if Hubie would still save them to make a point on how horrible they had been to Hubie? Maybe what her would-be victims thought was gasoline wasn't but they were too scared to properly smell it. Although it is worth nothing she choose to run as opposed to explaining herself to the police.
    • When Mike, the Henneseys and Peter give each one their own respective Freudian Excuse about why they mistreated Hubie, were their excuses really genuine or just a desperate attempt to save their own skins? On one hand the excuses don't sound convincing nor make much sense (with the arguable exception of Micheal’s and Lester’s) which will make you highly doubt them. On the other hand the threat had already been handled by that point (Hubie had already stopped his mom from burning them with his soup) and they seem to genuinely believe in them while giving them.
    • Is Hubie's mother a witch? Despite being a little old lady, she is able to kidnap four grown people from all over Salem in the span of one night all by herself, at some points seeming to yank them off-screen with a strength that should not be possible for someone of her size or age, and at the end when she distracts the rescue party, she seems to disappear into thin air with a very witch like cackle. At one point early in the film, Hubie points out an ancestor of his from the Salem Witch Trials who condemned the trial only to be executed as a witch herself.
  • Aluminum Christmas Trees: 'Boner' did at one point in the past mean 'mistake'.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: When Adam Sandler threatened to make the worst movie possible after being snubbed at the 2020 Oscars, everyone believed this film would be Sandler making good on his threat. When this film was actually released, it received mixed reviews overall but still wound up being his highest-rated pure comedy film since The Wedding Singer.
  • Iron Woobie: Hubie hits a car on his bike, falls into an open grave, and has increasingly dangerous items thrown at him throughout the night. He is no worse for wear physically.
  • Memetic Mutation: Prior to the announcement of the 2020 Oscar nominations, Adam Sandler jokingly threatened to create the worst movie he could come up with if he wasn't nominated for his performance in Uncut Gems. Following his snub by the Academy and during the lead up to this film's release, everyone began dubbing the film Sandler's "worst movie ever" based on his threat. Ironically, the actual movie ended up being one of Sandler’s better reviewed comedy movies (51% on Rotten Tomatoes).
  • Misaimed Fandom: Some people actually believe Hubie’s mom was the true hero and she did the right thing in spite of the fact she attempted mass murder on multiple people simply for bullying Hubie. Nothing his tormentors did warranted jail, let alone death, and while she may be more likable and sympathetic than them (she only wants the best for Hubie), that doesn’t change the fact what she did was absolutely insane. Hubie himself even points out how disproportionate her actions are.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Ben Stiller reprising his character Hal L. from Happy Gilmore.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: Several of the Halloween costumes worn by the minor and background characters are clearly influenced by pop culture in the late New Tens, such as Mike dressed as Freddie Mercury and all the news station women dressed as the Margot Robbie Harley Quinn.
