YMMV / Hot in Cleveland

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Is Elka a Cool Old Lady, or is she needlessly cruel and malicious (especially towards Joy) For the Evulz?
  • Base-Breaking Character: Elka's snark is either hilarious or undeserved cruelty.
  • Bizarro Episode: in Season 5 episode 17, the girls visit Elka at her house where they land in a cartoon version of Cleveland. They meet Steven Tyler who grants them three wishes, the first wish sends them to beauty land, where Joy turns into a balloon, Melanie becomes a Brainless Beauty and Victoria a Baby, the second wish causes a Zombie Apocalypse and the girls build their perfect men using built a bear equipment, and Elka’s third wish is that LeBron never left Cleveland which causes the town to turn into a second Los Angeles.
  • Crowning Moment of Funny: Joy's groom calls off the wedding, her new friend Vicky comforts her by jokingly promising to marry her herself.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Betty. White. To the point where virtually everyone credits the show's high ratings to the decision by the producers to turn her one-shot appearance in the pilot into a regular role. To everyone's credit, Elka has not yet become a full-fledged Breakout Character, but seems to be following in the footsteps of, appropriately enough, Sophia from White's own The Golden Girls.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Despite the fact that Joy ends up marrying Bob at the end of the show, most fans prefer to ship Joy with Victoria. This is mainly due to the fact that a lot of fans feel that Joy and Victoria have better chemistry than Joy and Bob. It doesn't help that Joy and Victoria have a lot of Les Yay between them, including them getting an Accidental Marriage in one episode. The majority of the fan works for the show across the Internet is Joy/Victoria.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • In the pilot episode, Joy (Jane Leeves) sarcastically asks Elka (Betty White) if she was a hundred. The latter passed away just 17 days shy of her centennial birthday.
    • Heather Locklear had a minor role in season 4 as the Psycho Ex-Girlfriend of Melanie's love interest. In 2018, Locklear was arrested for assault twice.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Compare White's role from Golden Girls and her role in this show. Hell, compare it to her role on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
    • Edge of Tomorrow eventually became the name of an actual movie!
  • Les Yay: Victoria and Joy. The two get into an Accidental Marriage in the season 2 finale and in the episode that shows how they met, Victoria promised to marry Joy in 20 years if the latter wasn't married yet.
  • Theiss Titillation Theory: Melanie in a trash bag-dress when she causes it to ride up in "Duct Soup".
