- Beware the Nice Ones: In "It's Not That Complicated", Melanie rekindles a romance with her ex-husband Anders who cheated on her. Unbeknownst to her, he gets back together with the woman he was dating and tries to leave town without telling Melanie. When she finds out, she goes to the airport to curse him out.
- Extreme Doormat: In "People Feeding People", the others were able to talk her into dating a guy who once ate someone to survive despite her obvious discomfort. This gets discussed in "Playmates" where her lack of assertiveness is a subject of mockery.
- I Have Boobs, You Must Obey!: In "LeBron Is Le Gone", she flirts with a bartender to make him change the channel from a basketball game to a channel about Oprah and Gayle. When the male patrons complain, all she has to do is flirt to make them calm down. When Elka asks to make them get ice cream from next door, Melanie says she'll try even though she "isn't wearing the right bra".

- A-Cup Angst: Elka frequently makes fun of Joy for her flat chest and she has been insecure about her boobs ever since high school. In "Storage Wars", she gets a water bra to impress a guy she is interested in.
- Freudian Excuse: Between getting knocked up and abandoned by her boyfriend Simon when she was a teenager and her fiancé Kyle leaving her at the alter, Joy's cynicism towards men isn't exactly unearned.
- Hidden Depths: She had a knack for mathematics when she was in college. Unfortunately, she dropped out.
- Private Detective: She starts showing interest in this as a career choice in season four.
- Teen Pregnancy: Joy got pregnant when she was 15, and gave up her baby for adoption she does meet him years later.
