- Alternate Character Interpretation: Much like the film this would eventually grow into, Skinamarink, the vagueness and ambiguity leave all of the characters open to interpretation, especially due to the final reveal that the boy and his mother are in hell:
- One of the most popular fan theories is that the mother killed her son to spare him from his cancer but then killed herself out of guilt (or merely committed suicide after her son passed away from the cancer), and this is her punishment. What she believes to be her son may actually be an illusion created by Hell to torment her with the fact that she will never be able to help him out or call out to him or comfort him ever again.
- Another theory is that the boy is actually possessed by a demon that they only believe is cancer, and the demon inside him is warping the house into their inescapable prison, tormenting either the boy with horrific illusions, such as that of his mother without a mouth, or tormenting them both for its own sadistic pleasure. While cancer does not play a single part in Skinamarink, the movie leans more into the idea that a sadistic demon is warping the house around to torment its inhabitants for no comprehensible reason.
- Nightmare Fuel: The boy's entire predicament. He remains stuck in the house for years, forever calling out to his mouthless mom who can't respond to him. There is No Escape from the house, and even he knows it.
