YMMV / Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series

Go To

  • Awesome Music: As expected of a Guardians of the Galaxy title.
  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Hala the Accuser is a big one. Some fans view her as a tragic Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds with a depressing motive to rescue her dead son and her endangered race, but others see her as a bland villain that lacks a lot of depth as a character and whose desire to conquer the universe makes her too unsympathetic to feel for.
    • Rocket's pretty equal with Hala with unsympathetic qualities. Even when he can get his way, he'll always find time to chew out Peter or pick a fight with Gamora over something trivial, basically bask at the possibility of Peter dying someway and basically be a Jerk with a Heart of Jerk.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Howard the Duck thanks to his hilarious emails. Gamers had hoped that he would eventually appear in person.
  • Fridge Brilliance: Drax is seen eating a lot. He feels he has no purpose after Thanos is killed and is trying to fill the hole that he does not quite understand.
  • He's Just Hiding: A popular theory early on was that Thanos either was pretending to be dead or would be resurrected in a later episode, since it was rather hard to believe Telltale would really kill off such a big-name villain so early in the very first episode. Indeed, when Nebula enters the plot, it's set up to look like she's trying to bring him back, and the Eternity Forge would give her the tools to do so. Surprisingly, he stayed dead for the rest of the game, although The Stinger showed a mysterious new assailant stealing his body.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • One of Gamora's flashbacks involves her, well, falling off a ledge.
    • Rocket's backstory here, is eerily similar to what is revealed in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 with both involving Lylla dying in an escape attempt. In this world, though, there’s a chance at a happier ending.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
  • Jerkass Woobie: Rocket is one when it's revealed that he planned to use the Eternity Forge to resurrect his deceased girlfriend Lylla. Unfortunately, his bitter attitude makes it hard to reason with him.
  • Jerks Are Worse Than Villains: Clarence, Peter's bully seen only in flashbacks, comes off as a far more disgusting character than the actual villains in the story. He has no sympathetic qualities, openly mocks Peter and his mom about her fatal illness, and says he will attend her upcoming funeral just to watch Peter cry.
  • Like You Would Really Do It: Most players chose to help Drax pull off his Heroic Sacrifice in Episode 4, betting on the fact that Telltale wouldn't kill off a Core member of the Guardians, especially since the visual for Episode 5 shows him in the background. Sure enough, Episode 5 reveals he survived.
  • Narm: Most of the actors wisely don't try too hard to sound like their MCU counterparts. The big exception is Yondu, who ends up sounding like a cartoon wheezing southern grandpa in an effort to imitate Michael Rooker.
  • Ship Tease:
    • In the beginning of episode 1, Peter and Gamora have a Held Gaze moment after Peter saves her from falling debris. Rocket is quick to kill the moment. Towards the end of episode 5, you can try to have Peter confess his feelings to her, although he ends up stumbling over his words. Not that Gamora's response is any more eloquent.
    • Episode 5 can see Mantis and Bal'Dinn getting along nicely if he was resurrected by the empowered Eternity Forge at the end of episode 3 and you agreed to work with him at the beginning of the chapter. You can ask Mantis about it directly, but she gets embarrassed and denies it.
  • Unintentional Uncanny Valley: The graphics for the humanoid characters have been unfavorably compared to Claymation figures.
  • Unexpected Character: While fleetingly mentioned in the background of the movie, who actually expected Lylla to show up here, complete with a more realistic art style? This also counts as Back for the Dead...sort of.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic:
    • Hala the Accuser's whole motive to resurrect her deceased son and the entire Kree race comes across as this for a few players since doing so involves mass genocide throughout the galaxy and the villain plans to conquer the universe with her new army once her goal is accomplished.
    • Rocket's desire to use the Eternity Forge to bring back Lylla can come across as this since his actions make him look unreasonably angry whenever he's not getting his way.
