YMMV / Guardians (2017)

Go To

  • Complete Monster: Dr. August Kuratov is a mad genius determined to rule the world and prove his intellect. Having kidnapped and experimented on innocents years ago to counter his rivals' more ethical projects, Kuratov empowered himself with the ability to control technology and began to massacre military forces and steal their weaponry for his own. After fatally wounding his former rival, Kuratov stages an invasion of Moscow that decimates the city and its population, planning to spread his technology control worldwide and take over the planet in destructive conquest.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Western audiences arguably have a more positive outlook at the movie. They do not consider it good, of course, but their opinion is more along the lines of "weird Russian thing" rather than "national shame".
  • Narm
    • Kuratov ultimately doesn't look all that intimidating, looking more like a giant muscular baby with an underwhelming powerset.
    • Most of the dialogue is ultra-cheesy and doesn't fit the Marvel Cinematic Universe tone the movie is trying to ape off of. It doesn't help that it's delivered with complete sincerity.
    • Whenever any of the Guardians decide to monologue about their past and their concerns about their powers, which ultimately doesn't matter since it doesn't really contribute to any Character Development. Ursus talking about his fear of staying in "Full Bear Mode" is the best example.
  • Popular with Furries: Ursus in bear form turned a lot of Bara fans' eyes towards what would have otherwise been an unremarkable movie.
  • So Bad, It's Good: Take in stride how hard the movie tries to invoke the Rule of Cool and fails to do so, and you'll enjoy it a lot more.
  • Special Effect Failure: Almost everything involving Ursus's bear form, especially with the minigun he wields near the end.
  • Spiritual Adaptation: The movie itself may seem to be a The Avengers ripoff but this the closest you could get to a Marvel adaptation of the Russian superhero group The Soviet Super-Soldiers.
