YMMV / Granpa

Go To

  • Ambiguous Ending: In the end, when Granpa's childhood self and the other children from his flashbacks join Emily and the dog as they frolic through the grass, does it just represent Emily treasuring her memories of Granpa? Or is it actually Granpa's spirit, and those of his old friends, De Aged In Death and watching over Emily?
  • Adaptation Displacement: Not a lot of people know there was a book.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Granpa's Doting Grandparent relationship with Emily serves up a steady parade of these. He knows he doesn't have long to live, but is determined to create as many memories for Emily as possible while he is alive, regularly letting her stay the night at his house, reading her stories, telling her about his own childhood, taking her to the seaside, taking her fishing (even though she insists it's dull because he never catches anything), taking her to play in the snow... and the ending, in which Emily encounters the children from Granpa's reminiscences (including what is implied to be Granpa himself as a boy), suggests he will live on in her memories for years.
  • Spiritual Successor: To The Snowman, right down to the fact that both end with the title character's death.
  • Tear Jerker: If the film isn't being heartwarming, it's being heartwrenching. We can see early on that age is overtaking Granpa, both physically and mentally, and when he drops the storybook in the jungle Fantasy Sequence and murmurs, "I'm not quite quick enough... anymore...", we know, even if Emily does not, that he will soon be gone.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: If she wasn't stated to be such and didn't wear skirts often, you would have mistaken Emily to be a boy, rather than a short-haired girl, especially when she is seen wearing her overalls.
