YMMV / Ghosts of Fear Street

Go To

  • Bizarro Episode: Don't Ever Get Sick at Granny's really gives I Live in Your Basement a run for its money in the "What the fuck?" department.
  • Complete Monster: In Spell of the Screaming Jokers, ghostwritten by Kathy Hall, The sorceress known only as "Mrs. Davidson" discovered that she could increase her magical powers by forcibly transforming young children into mindless Joker slaves using cursed Joker playing cards. To help her lure in victims, Mrs. Davidson takes a boy named Max prisoner and cajoles him into playing cards with other children by threatening to turn him into a Joker. Mrs. Davidson has a dozen Jokers under her control by the time she and Max move to Fear Street, where she arranges for four children named Brittany, Louisa, Frankie, and Jeff to regularly visit and play cards with Max. Every time one of the quartets draws a Joker card during a visit, Jokers appear to attack them, and brand them with a playing card suit; when Frankie is branded four times, he mutates into a Joker, and is enslaved by Mrs. Davidson. When the remaining three children realize what is going on, Mrs. Davidson forces them and Max to play one final card game with her using a rigged deck full of cursed Joker cards.
  • Ending Fatigue: A common criticism about Why I'm Not Afraid Of Ghosts is when the reveal of Oliver actually being a vampire is then followed by him explaining he's actually from a family of ghost hunters. Most often readers will think this was an unnecessary twist that ruins a perfectly good book.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Attack of the Vampire Worms. Jane and Lewis became friends with Bobby and the underground mutants, bringing them supplies like new books and furniture and keeping their secret. And Miss Woodley is happily reunited with Bobby, who she was supposed to marry before he got trapped in the caves.
  • Karmic Overkill: Body Switchers from Outer Space ends with Chad and his family being shrunk down into miniature statues and kept on Will's bedroom shelf in an And I Must Scream state. While Chad was undoubtedly wrong for trying to steal Will's life and his family was going to shrink down Will and his sister because they knew too much, this still comes across as needlessly cruel in hindsight. The aliens are intended to be antagonists, but their only reason for being on Earth in the first place is to study mankind, making their final fate coming across as Disproportionate Retribution at the very least.
  • Retroactive Recognition: The audiobook for Halloween Bugs Me features a young Scarlett Johansson.
  • Tear Jerker: The ending of Fright Christmas: While Kenny is let out of the closet at the store, and returns home to see his family, his mother worried, but happy he has returned, and the next day the dog who has gone missing returns as well. It is an inverted twist of All Just a Dream when Timmy shows up, Kenny notices Timmy as the third ghost from the dream and goes on to say how shocking it is, Timmy simply replies saying that it should not surprise him since he does live on Fear Street after all. While the story ends on a happy note, questions arise, if it all actually happened, why didn't anyone let him out of the closet at the store, were his family truly not happy to see him, etc. However, the ending contradicts itself, greatly. It is quite possible though that while Timmy might actually be a ghost, he might have conjured up the entire experience, so Kenny could end up experiencing it, thus making the experience an entire double subversion. Still quite sad to ponder though.
