YMMV / Georgie!

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Stefano Piffer suggests that the series makes a lot more sense when you view Abel and Arthur as Hormone Addled Teenagers.
  • Audience-Alienating Premise: The Buttman's attraction to Georgie is bad enough, but it's even worse when we see Georgie and Arthur get naked and cuddle, or Abel acting like a Crazy Jealous Guy over his adoptive sister. And there's also the fact that Lowell gets naked in front of Georgie when they're both young.
  • Girls Show Ghetto: The series being a girl-oriented series is the main reason it didn’t get an official translation until 2023, outside of the Brother–Sister Incest plot.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff:
    • Despite the fact that it was cancelled by Moral Guardians, Georgie! is crazy huge in South Korea. It was popular amongst boys as well as girls, and even the manga was released there.
    • It was also popular in Italy, despite the massive censorship. It even got a musical.
  • Ho Yay:
    • A mild case with Georgie and Elise, dressed as a boy to enter the boomerang contest. Elise almost kisses Georgie, making her blush. It is never brought up again
    • Catherine's mother gets really affectionate towards Georgie.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Mary Buttman is bitter and spiteful towards her adopted daughter Georgie, but she is still grieving for her husband and died with only Arthur at her side. She is made a bit more sympathetic in the anime and has some moments of genuine affection towards Georgie, despite her strictness, which makes her kicking Georgie out all the more tragic.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Many people tuned in just for Yumiko Igarashi's art, since she's well known for also doing the art of Candy♡Candy.
  • Moe: Georgie is a blonde, sweet, cheerful Naïve Everygirl, whose endearing nature is part of her appeal even in-universe.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: It received heavy backlash from parent groups in South Korea, who campaigned to have it cancelled. They repeatedly stressed that the anime was not suitable for kids and criticized the channel for showing such graphic content. This was notable for being the first backlash of it's kind in South Korea regarding anime. The parent groups won out and it was pulled from air, but it is still popular amongst Koreans to this day.
  • Signature Scene: Georgie and a very naked Lowell, nipples in view.
  • Moment of Awesome: Georgie saving Catherine from drowning and sharks.
  • Squick:
    • The fact that two of Georgie's romantic interests are her adopted brothers can turn people off to the series. At the end of the manga, Georgie not only has Abel's child, it's also implied she'll start a relationship with Arthur.
    • In episode 27, Arthur saves Georgie from drowning and tries to save her with Kevin's help. When the fire doesn't start and Georgie's temperature drops, Arthur decides to strip naked and hug an unconscious, also naked Georgie, to share his body heat with her. Barring the fact that it's her adoptive older brother doing this, two other things make this really uncomfortable by modern standards: She's thirteen in that episode, and there are multiple shots of her exposed breasts, with her nipples in full view.
  • Tear Jerker:
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: Very early in the series, Georgie's mother kicks her out of the house while screaming abuse at her. Said mother also dies alone regretting how she treated her. Then, Georgie gets a lot of grief over from Abel, who beats up his own little brother and runs away from home because he can't deal with his feelings for her. Then, Georgie's love interests die off like flies - Lowell succumbs to his disease after the two become an item and Arthur is Driven to Suicide after being raped repeatedly by Irwin, so he slits his wrists. Georgie finds a Second Love in Abel, until he dies to save Arthur. At the end of the series, it's just her and a very broken Arthur left to raise her and Abel's child. On top of constant antagonizing from the Dangerings and Georgie's multiple near-death scenarios, you can see why this anime remains unpopular amongst shojo readers.
  • The Woobie:
    • Lowell and Georgie; they love each other but they are unable to be together because Lowell is engaged to Elise and when he and Georgie live together for a time, he becomes sick, and not even selling her precious bracelet for medicine money will help him, so she returns him home. In the manga, they meet again, Lowell admitting he still loves Georgie despite his marriage to Elise
    • Arthur. The poor kid has to deal with so much in both anime and manga, from watching his mother die, to being tortured, drugged, and attempting suicide in both anime and manga (the former, he slits his wrists in the bath and attempts to bleed out before he is found, while the latter he is under the influence of said drug and jumps off the boat he and Georgie are on, but is rescued by a fishing boat.) The manga's ending may be considered a Throw the Dog a Bone moment for him, since it's the first time in a long time he's been truly happy.
