For the comic book:

  • Funny Moments: The series has its moments:
    • In Issue #3, the team ventures into Adele Poole's subconscious, which resembles something out of Archie.
    • In Issue #6, after most of the team have made another sojourn into the Heroscape, Cloud and Gamete are left alone to watch over them.
    Cloud: Soooo... do you wanna play a game while they're in there, or...?
    (Beat)
    Gamete: Do they have Settlers of Catan?
    Cloud: Oooh, I don't know! I'll look!
    • The Zeroes are so isolated from pop culture that they don't even know what Star Wars is. Keisha finally promises to lend them her Netflix password if they survive their mission.
    • When the team catches up with Kwame and Katy, Kwame matter-of-factly informs Keisha that he and Katy are dating now. Katy announces that they are, in fact, engaged.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Issue #3, published in October 2016, has Adele Poole declaring that she's going to be the second woman to be elected President of the United States of America. Less than two weeks after that issue was published, Hillary Clinton lost her bid to become President.

For the game:

  • Demonic Spiders: Hunters, one of the most common type of enemies have a very powerful, fast firing and long ranged normal attack and can take inordinate amounts of damage for a threat that's very common and very likely to be fought in packs of 3 to 8. Their upgraded versions, Military and FNIX are even worse being better armed and totting things like gas grenades to flush you out of cover and sniper rifles that can easily one-hit kill you. Their Apocalypse variants, the strongest ones, also have flamethrowers that are extremely hurtful and nigh impossible to avoid and can do damage over time faster than you can heal, and a cluster bomb cannon that deals damage on par with Harvesters. Fun times.
  • Goddamned Bats: Ticks, the small jumping enemies, are very annoying: their high mobility makes them hard to hit, and they do a lot of damage for their size.
  • Quicksand Box: There's very little hand holding here and besides the bunkers and warboards mandatory to finish the main storyline the game expects you to find landscapes and safehouses all on your own. You can easily get lost and wander off finding nothing but some angry machines for a while.
  • Scrappy Mechanic:
    • The initial lack of a skill tree respec. The fact the game also has a low level cap of 31, beyond which no more skill points are gained, doesn't help since wasting a few points in some skills is a painful mistake you'll be stuck with for a while. Leveling up is no trivial matter either. The "New Dawn" update in mid-2022 added a respec option, but it requires five Uranium, which you only start getting after you get past level 31.
    • Stealth is largely viewed as useless since anything above Ticks and Runners will easily pinpoint your location and start firing back after you hit a single shot several meters away... with all skills that reduce visibility. Hunters above Prototype will use their gas bombs or counter snipe you and Tanks and Harvesters are even worse since they can instantly retaliate with their artillery cannons.
  • That One Level: Restoring the power to the Vesslan command bunker. The switch is several levels underground, and the only illumination is your flashlight. It is also full of enemies who can see you just fine because of your flashlight, but who you can only see if you're looking right at them.
