YMMV / Garfunkel and Oates

Go To

  • Adorkable: Both of them, but Kate a little bit more so.
  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Is Beige Curtains about the protagonist's ex-boyfriend being a chauvinist jerk who dumped her for a quiet, submissive girl who won't overshadow or disagree with him, or is she a smug, narcissistic bitch who constantly belittles a woman she doesn't even know and thinks the only reason her ex could dump her was that she's too smart for him? Given the nightmare that is the modern dating scene, it's probably a little of both.
  • Cargo Ship: "Go Kart Racing".
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Often, but a prime example is "The Fadeaway," when they list an increasingly terrible amount of things that have faded away like the relationship detailed in the song. Examples: Bambi's mom, the erection of a man on antidepressants, Native Americans after the barter system, the family in the Back to the Future photo, the love between your mom and dad, and much worse.
  • Heartwarming Moments: "Rainbow Connections", a rare fully non-comedic song from the duo that celebrates gay marriage. The official animated video depicts two male Funny Animals falling in love and one of them eventually proposing at a Garfunkel & Oates concert - though presumably strangers, all the audience members around them are depicted crying tears of joy; even a woman with a goldfish bowl for a head is crying, somehow.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • "Me, You, and Steve" actually perfectly sums up the Steven Universe episode "Island Adventure", in which Kate Micucci's character Sadie repeatedly tries to be romantic with her love interest, Lars, but Steven is constantly obliviously interrupting them. Made into a fan video here.
    • "Sex with Ducks", which contains several references to DuckTales, became this after Kate got to voice Webby in its reboot, and even more so after Riki voiced May in the series finale.
    • "Who Said It: Kanye or Hitler?" Initially performed in 2009 to mock Kanye West's egomania by comparing it to that of Adolf Hitler, it gained new life following Kanye's Creator Breakdown in the late 2010s and early '20s, which culminated in him going on Alex Jones' radio show and literally praising Hitler.
  • Hollywood Homely: "Pretty in Buffalo" has Riki Lindhome singing about how she's considered pretty in rural New York, when she wouldn't be in California. It's one of their most heartwarming songs, but its message kinda falls flat given that Riki is gorgeous by any standard.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • "Fuck me in the ass 'cause I love Jesus."
    • Applying "Me, You, and Steve" to any romantic relationship where one of the characters has subtext with a different close friend is becoming popular. Examples of characters cast as Steve include Michael from Be More Chill and (of course) Steve Rogers.
  • Moment of Awesome: The Trying To Be Special... uh, special. Just the fact that they got a theater full of people to play kazoo along with a song called "Fuck You" may be the single most G&O moment ever.
  • Refrain from Assuming: "The Loophole" is better known by its iconic chorus line, "Fuck Me In The Ass Cause I Love Jesus", since its music video was passed around YouTube under that name.
  • Signature Song: "The Loophole" is their most famous song thanks to the memorable lyric "Fuck me in the ass 'cause I love Jesus".
