YMMV / Frogs

Go To

  • Broken Aesop: The film's "don't mess with Nature" message would probably be more credible if the animals seeking vengeance weren't mostly introduced species, hence no more beneficial to the ecosystem than Old Man Crockett's pollution.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The scene where Old Man Crockett starts hallucinating the animal heads in his trophy room vocalizing, as if he's being tormented by the spirits of the wildlife he abused, is legitimately creepy.
    • Most of the scenes involving snakes.
  • Nightmare Retardant: The main problem with the "villain" of the film. Unless they're poisonous, which the ones in the film aren'tnote , frogs aren't really capable of doing much harm to humans. Hence the ones in the film have to rely on other animals, some of which are capable of doing considerable harm such as snakes and alligators, to get their dirty work done.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Sam Elliott appears in his fourth movie, and his first leading role, here. He was cast in his Star-Making Role in Lifeguard after that film's director, Daniel Petrie, and his wife saw Frogs on TV one night.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Not one of the Martindales ever finds out about any of the others' deaths, when their reactions (and maybe seeing if that influenced any of them to side with Pickett) could have been interesting.
  • Took the Bad Film Seriously: The movie itself isn't well received, but many of the performances are seen as entertaining (or at least, not too wooden), with Ray Milland's being the most frequently complimented.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: Jason's relatives, considering how it's specifically mentioned that most of them don't live on the island and are only visiting, and thus aren't directly responsible for much (if any) of the ecological damage that's making the animals viciously kill them. Even Michael (who does needlessly shoot at birds and snatches a frog from the kids to throw across the lawn) has a couple Pet the Dog moments elsewhere in the story.
