YMMV / Friday Night Dinner

Go To

  • Ass Pull: The reveal in "The Females" that both Lucy's are pregnant and didn't tell either Adam or Johnny. While there was some foreshadowing to this during dinner for Jonny's Lucy (who wanted to take him away on holiday to deliver this news), Adam's Lucy didn't mention anything of the sort, coming off as a Contrived Coincidence. Even with the foreshadowing, the reveal altogether felt like it was plonked in the script at the last minute to give everyone a happy ending.
  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Both Adam and Johnny. You'll either like them for their childish personality and their practical jokes, or loathe them for the said reasons.
    • Martin Goodman. Viewers tend to like the character due to his idiocy, but loathe him for his Jerkass behaviour towards others.
  • Crosses the Line Twice:
    • Adam thinking that he killed Grandma after he tries to scare Jonny.
    I think I've killed Grandma...
    • The entire episode for "The Funeral" certainly counts, especially the ending where Johnny accidentally drops the coffin onto the ground because his headphones were unplugged, and then Jim's dog Wilson runs to the corpse and eats the parts of it.
    • Martin laughing at the news about Grandma's apparent fall in the episode "The Violin".
    • Jim's magic "disappearing act" finally working (technically, as whilst "Horrible Grandma" has the cover over her, she has a fatal heart attack.)
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Many of the one-off characters can be popular with audiences:
      • Mr. Morris, up to the point where there were three episodes based on him!
      • Mr. Greencock in the episode "The Piano" appears to be mildly popular due to his sarcastic personality.
      • The man Adam and Johnny invite to Jackie's party who has an obsession with chicken for some unknown reason.
      • Watson, the cat Jim looked after, seems to be popular despite only appearing in two scenes in the episode "The Carpet". There were even some fans saying that they wanted him to reappear in future episodes.
    • Wilson, Jim's dog, is appearing to become popular ever since the episode "Wilson", where he died from defecating.
  • Fountain of Memes: Jim Bell in just about every scene he appears in.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Viewers (both fans and non-fans of the show) tend to watch the show just to see what Jim Bell's up to.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • "SHIT ON IT!"
    • "No more chicken!"
  • Retroactive Recognition:
  • Rooting for the Empire: Many viewers of the show tend to prefer Johnny over Adam, or vice versa depending on how much of a Jerkass they are.
  • Squick: Adam and Jonny's pranks often result in this happening.
    • The Running Gag of them putting salt in each other's drinks.
    • In the Christmas special, Adam has to change the nappy of Horrible Grandma's elderly and incontinent dog. He rubs the used nappy in Jonny's face, hence the nickname "Dog-Pissface".
    Jackie: YOU'RE REVOLTING!
    • Martin eating a 20-year old tin of meat in the titular episode. An Ambulance Cut swiftly follows.
  • Tear Jerker: Jim's reaction to Wilson's death in the final episode of Series 5.
  • The Woobie:
    • You can consider Adam to one in many episodes, especially "Buggy", "The Girlfriend" and "The Surprise".
    • Johnny can also be considered one too in the episodes "The Yogurts", "The New Car" and "The Tin of Meat", whereas in the latter his boss comes to pick up a key, and unknown to Johnny the keys were swapped around thanks to Adam in retaliation to a practical joke done on him, meaning that his boss kept on making several visits getting angrier each time. Then there's the part where his company's car is covered in curry thanks to Val's husband, and this was in front of Johnny's boss' face.
    • Auntie Val can be considered one in some episodes involving her having an affair with her husband, and the episode "The Dress" where Martin inadvertently burns her new dress.
    • Benjamin, Johnny's friend in the episode "Lord Luck", is also worthy of a mention considering that his girlfriend split up with him and how Martin treated him.
  • Woobie Family: The Goodmans as a whole.
