  • Award Snub:
    • Even though it was received Academy Award nominations for Best Actor (Steve Carell), Best Supporting Actor (Mark Ruffalo), Best Director, and Best Screenplay (among others), the movie missed out on a Best Picture nomination.
    • Though Steve Carell, Mark Ruffalo, and Channing Tatum all received praise for their performances, nomination love mostly went to the first two despite Tatum receiving the most screentime (and thus bearing responsibility for driving much of the movie) and proving that He Really Can Act.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: When Mark introduces John Du Pont to his brother's family, he gets annoyed at Nancy for not getting off the bed to shake Du Pont's hand. He has a little argument with her out of nowhere and then storms out. The "episode" is never mentioned again, and even when Dave follows Mark out of the room he doesn't say anything about it and instead helps Mark with preparing for his next match.
  • He Really Can Act: Although Steve Carell and Channing Tatum had each proven their worth as actors, neither had done roles approaching the intensity of these, and they both pull them off phenomenally.
  • Jerkass Woobie: John du Pont himself. It's established that he only had one friend growing up, and even then that friend was only being paid by his mother to hang out with him. He wants his mother's approval, but she ignores him and dies before he can gain it anyway. He ultimately comes across as a very pitiable man.
  • Moral Event Horizon: John crosses it with his murder of Dave, done for completely petty reasons.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Vanessa Redgrave only appears in three scenes as John du Pont's mother (and only has lines in one of them), but her impact is clearly felt.
  • The Woobie: Mark. He's so adorably pathetic and has lived in his brother's shadow for so long that you can't help but feel sorry for him.
