  • In general, Dave Schultz is portrayed as just a really caring individual. He's supportive of his brother at every turn, is a dedicated father and husband, and he often addresses John in a courteous manner (even if he appears to hold some distaste for the man, as shown in the scene where he has to speak before a documentary crew). When John shoots him at the film's end, it's a pretty heartbreaking thing.
    • Dave helping Mark to train (and lose 12 pounds) when the latter screws up in a match halfway through the film is pretty heartfelt, and also the part where the two forge a reconnection.
  • After their first victory at Worlds, a drunk John starts wrestling with his team. They playfully oblige him, let him pin two of them, and start chanting his name. After spending most of his life without friends, for a brief moment, we see John genuinely happy before he spirals out of control.
