YMMV / Forbidden Zone

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The Forbidden Zone is so awesome that it was reused as the theme song to Dilbert.
  • Broken Base: Which version is better, the original black and white or colorized edition? Defenders of the colorized edition point to the deliberately washed out colors as enhancing the film's surreal qualities, as well as it being Richard Elfman's preferred version. Defenders of the black and white version, which was the only version available for decades, say that it makes it feel more like a live action Fleischer Bros. cartoon. And the less said about whether it was a good idea to replace all the blackface characters with clowns in the colorized version, the better.
  • Cult Classic: It's sometimes referred to as the Citizen Kane of cult films.
  • Fair for Its Day: The film's treatment of Squeezit's twin Rene is very nice considering that A. the movie revels in Refuge in Audacity for pretty much everything and B. it's from 1980. Squeezit defends Rene's gender identity when Flash accuses her of being a gay man in drag, and Frenchy uses Rene's correct pronouns from then on. Rene may be shown to be a pervert who looks forward to being sexually assaulted, but since nearly every other character is perverted, she doesn't stick out in that regard. Sure, the movie never definitively says if she's trans, but it's close enough from a modern perspective.
  • Foe Yay Shipping: The former queen and the current queen of the sixth dimension have the film's catfight.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The Synchro-Vox scene.
  • One-Scene Wonder: The Devil only shows up in one scene, but always shows up in the promotional art - probably because Danny Elfman plays him.
  • So Bad, It's Good: The example to end all examples. Some people consider this film to be the best worst movie they've ever seen.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: "Squeezit The Moocher" seems to have been the precursor to "Oogie Boogie's Song," another Danny Elfman-penned Cab Calloway tribute.
  • The Woobie: Squeezit, the universe's total Chew Toy. His parents are drunken sex-crazed abusive jackasses, he's a repeated bullying victim, and his only friends are Frenchy, Flash, and a bunch of chickens.
