YMMV / Flappy Bird

Go To

  • It's Hard, So It Sucks!: Falls into this for some people.
  • Misblamed: A handful of people seem to think that the reason the game was taken down from the store was because of Nintendo threatening legal action, which isn't even remotely close to the truth. It also has nothing to do with the media and consumer backlash; this was more due to the creator unable to cope with the massive attention.
  • Nintendo Hard: The pipes have just a little bit more than what you need to navigate between them, without a difficulty curve or any more obstacles. You'll go as far as your reflexes and nerves let you.
  • Older Than They Think:
    • The game's flapping mechanics, considered novel by some, go as far back as the classic arcade game Joust from 1982. Also, the Auto-Scrolling Level presentation where you weave around walls has been a staple of simple browser-based games since 2004 at the very latest.
    • The concept of the game also isn't something new for mobile games. Jetpack Joyride has a vehicle named Profit Bird, the looks and controls of which are very similar to Flappy Bird, just as part of a bigger game released few years earlier.
  • Polished Port: The Android port had improved collision detection, better graphics and quicker restarts. However, the iOS version was updated to match eventually.
  • Surprise Difficulty: Despite the game's simple premise and controls, it's surprisingly hard to get even to double digits.
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: The game was criticised by some for being an almost complete copy/ripoff of a French-developed game called Piou Piou vs. Cactus, including gameplay (tap on the screen), main character design (small yellow bird with big red beak) and obstacles (green pipes/cacti). When confronted about this, Nguyen claimed he had never heard of Piou Piou vs. Cactus.
