YMMV / Ellie Goulding

Go To

  • Americans Hate Tingle: Goulding has a hard time selling in France, with all three of her albums and almost all of her singles except "Love Me Like You Do" and "Burn" barely made a blip in the chart.
  • Awesome Music: "Love Me Like You Do", "Burn", "Falling For You" and "Outside" are all very good songs she at least sung.
  • Archive Panic: Halcyon had multiple editions with exclusive bonus tracks for various territories and retail outlets, with an Updated Re Release Halcyon Days - which had a deluxe edition of its own for a total of 33 different songs. You'd be forgiven to just give up on collecting the album in its totality at this point.
  • Award Snub: Both "I Need Your Love" and "Burn" lost out to One Direction's "Best Song Ever" for Best Video at the Brit Awards despite being the favorite to win.
  • Broken Base: Fans are very divided about Delirium and its significantly more mainstream sound than her previous albums. Some are embracing the new sound while others don't like it at all.
  • Covered Up: Judging by YouTube, she's done this to "High for This" by The Weeknd.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Generally agreed to be the only good thing that came out of Fifty Shades of Grey, so much so that she set a Tough Act to Follow for the soundtrack of the sequel that it failed to live up.
    • Is this for the synth-pop genre as a whole due to Ellie's folk influence and emotive vocal that wins over a lot of critics who criticise the genre as soulless.
  • Epic Riff:
    • "Lights".
    • "Anything Could Happen" manages this with Ellie's voice.
  • Fandom Rivalry: Goulding and Ed Sheeran fans don't get along because of rumor of dating from his side that ended with her cheating on him and inspired Sheeran to write "Don't" (which she denied). Not help is speculation that she wrote "On My Mind" as retaliation.
  • Friendly Fandoms: Her and Elton John's fans seem to get along well. This is probably because her cover of John's "Your Song" brought the song back to mainstream attention after almost 40 years.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Unavoidable given how huge she is worldwide, some areas will like a song more than others. Few standout examples are:
    • "Lights" peak higher than almost every market than in her native UK-Ireland except for Australia, even making Top 10 in US, Belgium and Canada.
    • "Figure 8" made into the top 10 (peak at #7) in New Zealand while misses the top 30 in the UK.
    • "Something In the Way You Move" made to the top 20 (peak at #17) in Belgium despite insignificant sales in other areas.
  • Hype Aversion: Winning both a BRIT Award and the BBC Sound of 2010 title before her album was even released probably caused some people to avoid her and the hype being generated around her by the media.
  • Memetic Loser: Goulding has somehow earned a reputation for being a wicked, unfaithful figure in multiple unsavoury cheating rumours for various British musicians, from allegedly cheating on Ed Sheeran to cheating with Marina Diamandis' boyfriend. The rumours are unsubstantiated.
  • Memetic Mutation: This infamous video of Goulding "glitching" during a live performance of "Burn". Is she a robot? A clone created by the Illuminati? A glitch in The Matrix? We'll never know...
  • Moe: Goulding herself. Her singing has a uniquely sad and "vulnerable but never break" quality to it that makes her very endearing and stands out in pop music.
  • Narm: "Hanging On" is a genuinely brooding and sad-sounding cover of the titular Active Child song. Which makes one really wonder why a remix that brought in Tinie Tempah, whose verse includes the line "Miss something 'bout your cleavage", was produced.
  • Refrain from Assuming: "Guns and Horses" isn't called "All for You" or "I Would".
  • Signature Song: "Burn" and "Anything Could Happen" in the UK and Australia, and "Lights" in the US. "Love Me Like You Do" for the movie audience.
  • Song Association: "Anything Could Happen" is beloved by New Girl fans due to being the song played during Jess and Nick's first Big Damn Kiss.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • "Hanging On" is rather brooding and sad. (The version with Tinie Tempah's verses, on the other hand...)
    • "Dead in the Water".
    • "Lights": The plaintive way she sings "Home, hoo-oo-me..." is really sad.
    • "I Know You Care," about someone who's in denial about another person not caring about them. For anyone who's going through a break-up, this can bring sobbing fits.
"I used to run down the stairs,
To the door and I thought you were there.
To shape to the comfort of us,
Two lovers locked out of love.
    But I know you care,
I know it has always been there..."
