  • Badass Decay: His main roster run during his return to WWE was hideously botched. For a long time he wasn't allowed to talk, despite him always being a great talker with servicable wrestling ability. Then crowds failed to get behind him early as he spent several weeks beating an outgoing Dean Ambrose in 2 or 3 minute matches despite Dean being willing enough to put him over big time in longer ones, which as Ambrose pointed out, just made it look like WWE was punishing him and would lead to any opponent suffering the crowd's ire. It's generally believed his terrible booking since then has been down to Vince McMahon blaming him for this.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • He was the uncrowned winner of the WWE NXT Redemption season only to find himself back on the indies within a month. Then he went to TNA and went on a two-year path to one of the biggest heels in the business and a centerpiece of the second biggest wrestling company in the United States as a two-time World Heavyweight Champion, becoming arguably the most successful NXT contest alum behind his trainer, Daniel Bryan.
    • EC3's tenure in TNA saw him butting heads with Montel Vontavious Porter, a former WWE wrestler who in TNA was only known as "MVP" (which was the name he was better known as, anyway) since TNA obviously couldn't use his full WWE name. Now EC3 is back in WWE (after having previously appeared in the company as Derrick Bateman) as... EC3, with WWE using the initials of his previous ring name but never his full "Ethan Carter III" name just like TNA did with MVP.
  • Shocking Elimination: A downplayed example through NXT Season 4. He was generally considered to be the best in ring technician of that season's rookies, and his over the top personality along with the backing of the best wrestler alive today made him the most consistently over. However, it's less of an example because he actually managed to make it to the final three, the only reason he got eliminated before the final two was because of an injury that held him back, and the other two, Johnny Curtis and Brodus Clay, were considered to be fairly good as well, but many thought Bateman would last until the end.
