YMMV / Drakkhen

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The music for the Very Definitely Final Dungeon definitely qualifies.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • The monster grunts in the SNES port, thanks to the Game Grumps attempt at the Super Famicom version, and comparing it to JonTron's signature "ECHH."
    • "HAK HAK DRAKKHEN!", a Battle Cry yelled by some enemies is fairly well known by anyone who's heard of this game.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • You're walking around in the quiet night, when suddenly, amidst screaming music, the stars themselves come alive and try to kill you.
    • The Fire Area has the Love Monster, a monster that repeatedly says "I LOVE YOU" in a variety of pitches (in the computer versions). It's creepier than it sounds. It was replaced by moaning in the SNES port, which makes it even worse.
    • Whatever is in the fireplace in Haaggkhen's Castle. All the game says is, "At the far end, something remains unburned," then you get into a fight with an unrecognizable monster that makes an awful noise.
    • The premise itself. No matter the version you're playing, your party of four are the only humans in an EXTREMELY hostile land, with many of the non-aggressive encounters playing out with your characters being told how you're going to die, guards being called on you, being reminded of just how dire the situation is, etc. etc. The situation is bleak, your chances of success are bleaker, and no matter what you're on your own for the most part.
    • Unless you randomly manage a rare hit that kills them in one shot, the four Drakkhen lords you face are worthy of being called bosses. No matter how much you prep for them, they still easily overpower you, reinforcing that you are indeed puny humans trying to take on something far greater than yourself.
    • The apocalyptic game over text when your party is wiped out, describing the spread of dragonkind and the extinction of humanitynote . In the SNES version, you get the bonus of a heartrending tune during this to remind you of just how badly you failed.
    • Newcomers to the game may find it funny ramming into things with the funny "DONK!" noise that plays when you bash your nose into a tree, but it ceases being funny when tree becomes a tombstone and a gigantic hellhound head angrily pops out to obliterate your party. "Watch where you're going" indeed...
    • The monsters in general are horrifying. While plenty of Narm is in effect, the fact that maybe 60% of the creatures you face are typical fantasy creatures while the remaining 40% are...something else altogether that's both out of place and/or freaky to look at is rather unsettling.
    • The fact that compared to later games where gear is either indestructible or at the very least repairable, your armor breaking from enough abuse and quite often at the worst moments is nerve-wracking. That +125 Defense from a full suit of Dragon Armor can be quickly reduced to nothing from powerful enough attacks, reiterating that you are not safe no matter what.
