- And You Thought It Would Fail: Sidney Howard initially saw the book not thinking it or its premise would work out very well to the point where he said, "Who the hell cares about a middle-age love story? Nobody."
- Award Snub: Only Walter Huston and Maria Ouspenskaya were nominated for acting Academy Awards. Granted they were up against other great candidates, but maybe Ruth Chatterton or Mary Astor could have been mentioned, especially since they got more time than Maria.
- Ensemble Dark Horse: Baroness Von Obersdorf doesn't appear until the third act and it's only for one scene, but she's so memorable and well-performed, her actress even got a Supporting Actress nomination.
- One-Scene Wonder: Austrian Baroness von Obersdorf who refuses to let Fran marriage her son. Mama Bear, Ice Queen, Tough Love, Dark Is Not Evil, all in four minutes. There's a reason she got an Oscar nomination for supporting actress.
