- Bellisario's Maxim: Jenner has stated (paraphrasing) that he's more interested in telling evocative stories rather than hashing out details such as how exactly the law works in regards to hunting and not to worry too much about inconsistencies.
- Genius Bonus: In addition to a lot of actual medical information strewn about the comic (Jenner is an actual doctor, after all), there are also things like character names based on real-world taxonomy, or Katherine's rather meaningful choice of Hypatia as her online handle.
- Hilarious in Hindsight: Jenner drew a strip showing a version of The Three Little Pigs where the Big Bad Wolf used an inhaler before taking on the Third Pig's brick house. This was in 2008, a full six years before an advertisement for COPD medication Symbicort showed The Big Bad Wolf getting prescribed the medication.
- Moral Event Horizon: At first, Neal the snake merely wanted food, with respect for the law but no regard for who else would suffer in the process. Ben convinced him to try fast food, which was so addictive and unhealthful that Neal nearly killed himself. After that, he made a point to lose enough weight for a predatory Roaring Rampage of Revenge — planning to eat not Ben but the entire family of his first intended prey.
- Alternative Character Interpretation: Since Ben tried to talk Neal out of eating Brayden by noting all the dependents who'd be left behind, maybe this is Neal's idea of mercy.
