YMMV / Devil Hunter Yohko

Go To

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Is Sayoko simply a sex crazy woman who couldn't control herself when she was a teenager, and now spends too much time trying to convince Yohko to have fun while she can and lose her virginity? Or did she deliberately lose her virginity before she would've become a Devil Hunter in order to disqualify herself, and kept trying to convince Yohko to have sex so she wouldn't have that responsibility placed on her shoulders. Which also calls into question why she did it because she was already flighty and irresponsible, or because the idea of fighting demons terrified her and was never given a choice in the matter? Likewise, was she trying to protect Yohko from that burden because she didn't think it was fair for Yohko to get forced into the role and wanted to protect her daughter from getting killed in the line of duty, which does happen in the fifth episode.
  • Awesome Music:
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Any of the music videos in episode 4 that don't contain recycled footage from the previous episodes.
  • Fridge Brilliance: In play when the two connect their rings together before traveling back to the present, so Yohko's would have transferred its accumulated power back into Haruka's.
  • Fridge Horror: Ayako's mother is never even mentioned in the final OAV, outside of a brief pre-battle speech by Ayako about how her grandmother Chiaki's hatred has been passed down through the generations. Then remember that a) Chiaki's entire modus operandi is to have one of her descendants beat up one of Madoka's descendants to take their status as titled Devil Hunter, and b) Yohko's mom Sayako was disqualified from her status as the 108th Devil Hunter because she had sex (and a Teen Pregnancy) at age 15. Since this meant Chiaki had to postpone their duel to the next generation... did she force her own daughter to get pregnant at age 15 so she'd have a granddaughter who was the same age as her grandneice?!
  • Never Live It Down: Sayoko never became a Devil Hunter because she gave up her virginity at age 15. Madoka never misses an opportunity to remind her of it, which often sparks a fight between them... usually during breakfast!
  • Nightmare Fuel: Yohko getting killed by Tokima. His clawed hand emerges out of Azusa's shadow and digs through her chest, bursting out her back. Yohko can only gasp as Madoka lets a heartrending Big "NO!" before collapsing to her knees. Sure, Yohko gets revived by her ancestor Haruka, but it's as horrible as it as tragic seeing the heroine actually die after five episodes.
