YMMV / Deltarune Chapter 2: A Cyber's World

Go To

Deltarune | The Beginning | A Cyber's World

  • Accidental Innuendo: When Ralsei and Susie re-join the party, Noelle places herself behind Susie in the lineup. While she's behind Susie, she uses her embarrassed, blushing sprite, which happens to include showing her gaze fixated downwards, making it look like she's staring at Susie's ass. Considering that she then quickly discovers that Susie has a tail that she hides under her clothes, this may not be accidental.
  • And You Thought It Would Fail: Toby Fox himself admitted that he wasn't sure anyone would like Spamton, partially due to negative reactions to his Non-Standard Character Design during testing. One look at the fanbase post-Chapter 2 can prove him wrong. Really, really wrong. He even lampshades this in the very same tweet, pointing out how the Spamton merch sold out so quickly that Fangamer had to order seven times more to meet demand.
    "... uh, is that good?"
  • Angst Aversion: Upon the internet's discovery of the Weird Route, there were plenty of players who were dissuaded from going through with it from just how screwed up it is. You have to force an outright abusive Break the Cutie/Corrupt the Cutie situation on Noelle to make her murder everyone in your way, including Berdly by freezing him solid. Many go as far as to say it's arguably even worse than Undertale's Genocide Route in terms of how dark it is, since you're corrupting an innocent mind in order to do it. Plus, there's no reward for going down this route (yet); the only change is a slightly harder version of Spamton NEO as the Final Boss. While it's still too early to determine how deep its scope will go (given that only two Chapters have been released so far), as with the Genocide Route in the previous game, there's seemingly no reason to be so cruel unless you feel like being a jerk.
  • Anti-Climax Boss: While Spamton NEO's superboss fight is extremely cool and has kept many a player on their toes, it's also noticeably much easier compared to his Chapter 1 counterpart, Jevil. His patterns are on average more straightforward and he does not hit as hard, whereas the party has only gotten stronger since their battle with the Monster Clown. Averted, however, when Kris needs to fight Spamton NEO alone on the Weird Route ― he does provide a proper challenge as his damage is no longer split between multiple party members, and the player has to split their efforts between damaging Spamton NEO and keeping Kris's health in shape.
  • Awesome Bosses:
    • Queen is a step up from King, who already was impressive himself. She has a wide array of attacks, many with her signature humor, and rather than being a waiting game, the merciful method of winning requires you to take an active effort in freeing Berdly from his wire. The real fight, though, is her second form: the superpowered Thrash Machine versus Giga Queen, a Humongous Mecha battle that applies RPG Elements to an intense match of Punch-Out!!.
    • Chapter 2's Superboss Spamton NEO, in a way, delivers on something fans of Undertale had wanted for years; a true battle against Mettaton NEO. It takes the Yellow SOUL mechanics and expands on them, adding a [[BIG SHOT]] and power-ups that Susie and Ralsei can create using TP, while Spamton's... eccentric personality gives him a whole array of bizarre attacks for you to deal with. Topping it all off is the music, which takes elements from "Power of NEO" and "THE WORLD REVOLVING" and combines them with Spamton's own theme to incredible effect. Spamton NEO is even upgraded to Final Boss status in the Weird Route, where he's even more of a challenge than he was before. Not only are his attack patterns faster, but Kris is on their own, meaning you have to cycle between attacks and healing while dodging Spamton's bullet patterns. Even in a path as grimdark as the Weird Route, Spamton doesn't hold back on the memorable quips, "BIG SHOT" is still blaring in the background in all its glory, and it's topped off with being backdropped by the Dark Fountain.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment:
    • The "Kris Get The Banana" gag stands out as being especially random, even for Queen. Successfully collecting the banana (or not) only changes a single line of dialogue. The only reference to it is when the exact gag is done again later in the Chapter, with the same irrelevant outcome. (Outside of potassium levels.)
    • Spamton's introduction scene has him punch a dumpster in pure rage, before the entire game and Spamton himself continue like nothing happened.
      • Hell, Spamton's entire introductory scene can feel like a BLAM if the player does not seek out his shop afterwards (which they will not be able to do until quite a bit later in the game). He appears out of left field, presents a distorted and hard-to-follow sales pitch about being a "Big Shot," attacks Kris with a series of surreal bullet patterns, can only be placated by agreeing to unspecified "deals," and then disappears again, still cackling madly. Kris being Kris, this encounter is not discussed afterwards and they continue their journey with Noelle and Queen as if none of that just happened.
    • The scene where Kris walks into a room without anyone else following them and gets crashed into by the Annoying Dog driving a toy car, which then leads to a Game Over screen just like the one from Undertale before the dog drives into that too. Then Kris and whoever is in the party at the time are in the actual room they're supposed to be in, and it's never brought up again aside from there now being a Dog Dollar in your items.
  • Breather Boss: Rouxls Kaard and the Thrash Machine are by far the easiest boss of the Chapter, if not the entire game, and depending on what you do, you'll fight them either before GIGA Queen, before Spamton NEO, or between the two. You can technically make it harder if you wished, but, but nothing's stopping you from making a Duck. Plus, the outcome of Rouxls' game ultimately doesn't matter, even if he wins.
  • Can't Un-Hear It: If you read a webcomic about Spamton, chances are you'll hear him with the voice of Alex Rochon, thanks to his popular fandubs and frequent participation in Spamton-related fan projects (most famously Hobo Hobo's animations). If not, then it's just as likely you'll hear the voice of Nolan David, also known as theniftytable, whose take spread quickly after a short clip of Spamton struggling on the toilet, based around the preexisting "Why is it called a restroom? I'm fighting for my life in here!" meme. And if neither of them come to mind, then Juno Songs' voice for Spamton is just as likely to be ingrained in your head, with him singing two songs as Spamton using a Gilbert Gottfried impression.
  • Catharsis Factor: Berdly is snide, arrogant, and oblivious to the fact that he's on the wrong side. Noelle tries to reason with him and gets especially bewildered by his actions if she takes damage during the second battle, confused at the dissonance between his attempting to "save" her and hitting her in the face with a tornado. For those that remain Pacifist and find ways to spare him, it's quite satisfying to see him fall to his knees exhausted before he slinks off in shame.
  • Common Knowledge: Because the game's sprites are small, it's common to assume that Noelle is choking Berdly during the scene where he confesses to having a crush on Susie. Looking closely at their sprites reveals that she's actually grabbing him by the front of his shirt, not his throat.
  • Creepy Cute: Spamton is a disturbing and dangerous Perverse Puppet, but his short stature and unique personality and speech patterns cause much of the fandom to find him adorable.
  • Crosses the Line Twice:
    • If you choose to fight Jigsaw Joe in the dojo, the reward will be "Joe's Life Savings". That in itself is hilarious, but it becomes better when you realise his life savings are exactly 1 Dark Dollar. And then you decide to CHECK him…
    • Driving Noelle to straight up kill Berdly after spending her entire run as a Guest-Star Party Member corrupting her into getting 'stronger' is a horrifying climax to possibly the most disturbing events to take place in either of this game or Undertale so far, which continues to have terrifying ramifications on her psyche afterwards. However, some of the tension can be let out very quickly if, already having noticed his dark world design resembles Falco, you see the way that Berdly's SnowGrave, in a blue hexagonal shape surrounding him, was designed to clearly resemble the Reflector, Falco's most iconic technique in Super Smash Bros. Melee.
    • Shortly afterwards, Spamton reveals that he knows about Berdly's death… and refers to it as "making [Frozen Chicken]". Oh, and he calls Noelle Kris's [Side Chick] and a "[Hochi Mama]".
  • Demonic Spiders: Werewerewires are more powerful versions of Werewires that sport faster and more damaging attacks. These attacks can be very difficult to dodge due to their speed, especially if you're fighting two at once. They also take longer to spare in comparison. Fortunately, you're only required to fight just one of them during the main story. The Party Dojo in Castle Town, however, has a few challenges that feature them.
  • Discredited Meme: For a while, there were a series of memes (this image being one of the most famous) involving Spamton being against NFTs (non-fungible tokens, a kind of cryptocurrency marketplace that became popular on the Internet earlier in 2021, and subsequently became extremely controversial), the joke being that even he has enough standards to not sell them. However, this meme has since been called out by many in the fandom as an example of Psychological Projection and the leather-pantsing of Spamton: he's the kind of character to sell anything (even literal poison) and would thus have no problem with NFTs.
  • Draco in Leather Pants:
    • Spamton being the fan-favorite of the Chapter and a Jerkass Woobie makes people forget his Moral Event Horizon crossing on the Weird Route, or in extreme cases, basically any instance of anything evil he's ever done. In cases where they do acknowledge it, they paint at it as either Spamton becoming remorseful after seeing the consequences of Noelle's rampage or otherwise being disgusted at what you've done, and pulling a Heel–Face Turn to stop Kris and avenge his fallen friends. In reality, Spamton is a remorseless prick who's completely fine with the "[Total Jackass Stunts]" you have pulled, and fights you for purely pragmatic reasons. Even on the Normal Route, there are implications he never had any good intentions for what to do after getting his NEO form. In a nutshell, the fanbase turns an Evil vs. Evil conflict between Spamton and the SOUL into a classic good vs. evil story like the battle with Sans in Undertale. In fact, it's possible the Sans fight is one of the main reasons for why this belief exists, as they're both small, funny characters with Hidden Depths taking a level in badass and delivering a brutal, yet amazing boss fight with even better music, while their enemy is a genocidal human.
    • The Addisons often get an understandable excuse for abandoning Spamton once he hit it big, such as him completely forgetting about them, believing he's too good for them, or otherwise taking a level in jerkass. In reality, besides one comment from Spamton that's self hatred more than anything, there is nothing implying the Addisons left Spamton for any other reason than pure envy at the fact he made it big. Even when mourning his possible death, one of the pink Addisons just can't help themselves but ask why did he deserve it and they didn't, despite the fact they were somewhat-successful salesmen (well, successful when compared to pre-phone call Spamton) while Spamton, before meeting his Anonymous Benefactor, was a literal nobody. There has been also the popular headcanon that the Addisons don't know where Spamton is and even presume that he's dead, despite the fact that they are right in front of Spamton's shop after his Superboss fight, meaning they knew where their friend was and still refused help him. For what it's worth though, it's been implied that at least one of them isn't as bad as the others, as a blue Addison says they went to check up on their old friend when he was about to be thrown out of Queen's Mansion.
  • Fandom-Enraging Misconception: You will be torn apart by fans for suggesting that Noelle's corruption during the Weird Route was entirely Kris' fault, when the game repeatedly indicates that it's actually the fault of the player for choosing to go down the route in the first place.
  • Fandom-Specific Plot:
    • The Salt Route, a fake secret route that apparently arose from a Twitter user's dream, involving a disturbing SnowGrave-esque plot in which Kris can collect "salt stains" along the map, which allows Spamton to be recruited as a party member, with all enemies from then on only permitting victory through violence and Spamton becoming increasingly reluctant throughout. This route, especially Spamton's final words "I made you proud, didn't I?" blew up within the fandom, with numerous fan works and interpretations being created around this story alone.
    • The infamy of the Weird Route, combined with the creation of the above Salt Route, gave rise to fanworks of alternate continuities for Chapter 2 that essentially swap another character into Noelle's role. As the Guest-Star Party Member, the character of focus is manipulated into a killing spree by the Player through Kris with ominous repeated phrases, culminating into them using their analogue for the SnowGrave spell against their loved ones. They end with the party member leaving, after either following through or breaking down from the stress.
    • An idea that has been quickly gaining traction in fanfiction is characters rescuing Spamton off the streets in hopes of helping him, with Swatch being the usual candidate, inevitably resulting in Swatch/Spamton becoming a thing sooner or later.
  • Fanfic Fuel: During the Weird Route, the player never gets to see exactly what happens between Susie and Noelle in her room, with Susie brushing off Ralsei's queries as to what occurred aside from her telling Noelle that she was just dreaming. This has sparked fan content speculating just what happened between them in that time, especially given the circumstances.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • The alternate darker storyline involving Noelle is inconsistently named even in the game's source code (being referred to in various places as "weird", "alternate", and "side B"), but "Weird Route" is the one most people consider probably kinda official. It's also dubbed the SnowGrave Route due to the spell of the same name playing a pivotal role in it, "No Mercy" or "Genocide" due to its obvious parallels to Undertale's "kill everyone" route, or the "Pipis Route" due to the increased prominence of Spamton NEO and his bizarre egg-shaped projectiles.
    • Chapter 2 is occasionally given the Pun-Based Title of "Delta2ne".
  • Fan-Preferred Cut Content:
    • Spamton NEO has more unused attacks than used ones. While the fight that made it in-game is already well-regarded, a lot of fans wish that these additional attacks would've been kept in and polished, for still being fun to play against and adding more variety to the fight. In particular, one acts as a Continuity Nod to the Mettaton EX fight in Undertale by playing the attack backwards after it's completed, while also resembling the Galactic Nova fight from Kirby Super Star.
    • There's an early version of the Tasque Manager battle left over in the game's files in which the ACTs used to spare her had the party pretend to be dogs for her to tame, complete with sprites of them with puppy ears and tails. Many fans familiar with this version were disappointed these ACTs were cut, as they featured unique dialogue that gave the fight some extra flavour and personality, and made much better use of the aforementioned "puppy" sprites, which were limited to a blink-and-you'll-miss-it animation in the final version.
  • Fountain of Memes:
    • Spamton, whose Electronic Speech Impediment, creepy-yet-hilarious manic personality, and often Non Sequitur dialogue makes him an endless goldmine of memetic quotes. His bonus boss form Spamton NEO continues on with even more memetic quotes.
Spamton: NOW'S YOUR CHANCE TO BE A [[BIG SHOT]]!!
    • Queen's funny and energetic personality and Unique Speech Pattern have also made her a case of this, becoming a fan favorite.
      Queen: Kris Get The Banana
  • Genius Bonus:
    • The Rejected Concept for Berdly's theme is a pastoral fiddle tune interspersed with bird calls. The bird calls are of actual blue jays.
    • A piece of Flavor Text during Berdly's fight states that he's "going to his mind palace." This is a real, widely-documented memorization strategy that involves visualizing a room, tying specific memories into each of the room's objects, then "walking" through the room when trying to recall specific bits of information, not unlike how each Dark World corresponds to Light World areas and objects.
    • The Weird Route, centered around level grinding for Noelle, contains the ThornRing weapon, which lowers Noelle's health to 55 when in battle. "55" can be read as "LV" in Roman numerals.
    • Spamton carries a number of avian motifs with him, and in the Weird Route, the egglike Pipis enemies are littered all over Queen's mansion when he hijacks it. Some species of birds are brood parasites, laying their eggs in other birds' nests and forcing eggs of the native species out so that the unaware parent raises the parasitic chicks instead.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: The Sweet Cap'n Cakes trio are liked enough in the West, but they're especially popular in Japan due to their fun designs created by popular Japanese artist Nelnal.
  • Goddamned Bats: The mouse cursor created by the Maus is simple to avoid on its own, as is simply follows your SOUL around. Combined with other bullet patterns, however, and it becomes extremely problematic when trying to circle around bullets.
  • Goddamned Boss: Queen is a fun fight and still not too difficult, but she has the annoying trait of deploying an acid shield after using her glass attack. Neither her nor Berdly can be interacted with while the barrier is up, requiring the party to repeatedly Toast until the shield is drained so they can continue making progress. She pulls this three times during the fight, and the shield gets taller with each use. Basic attacks and Susie's Rude/Red Buster can destroy the shield faster if used right, but it gets very TP-expensive and a mercy-based playthrough is unlikely to have the best attack-boosting items equipped or even available. On the bright side, getting the Devilsknife doesn't impact the story anymore than if you got the Jevilstail, and you're unlikely to use TP for anything else if you don't need Ralsei's healing abilities.
  • Good Bad Bugs:
    • During the Spamton NEO fight, it's possible to fire an unlimited amount of charged shots after only charging once, greatly increasing your firepower. An update left the bug in (albeit with a different way of activating it), but it will significantly increase Spamton NEO's attack power in the process (causing knockdowns in only a few hits), though the attack boost decreases in scale every time you lose to him. This basically turns the glitch into a perfect play speedrun tactic as you become a Glass Cannon as a result.
    • Normally, stat growth from defeating enemies with violence is limited because a given Preexisting Encounter can only be defeated once and then never spawns again. The Ambyu-Lance chasing a Virovirokun in Cyber City, however, is an exception — for some reason, as long as the Virovirokun is spared, you can do whatever you want to the Ambyu-Lance and the encounter will always respawn, allowing unlimited grinding.
  • Growing the Beard: While Chapter 1 was already well-regarded by fans and critics, Chapter 2 is considered a huge step up in quality, fleshing out the game's mechanics, featuring a much more detailed story (that even includes a branching path in the form of the Weird Route), diving deeper into the cast's relationships with one another, and overall working to further distinguish the episodic game from Undertale.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • One of Spamton's shop dialogues apparently has him reference Jevil, stating his intention to surpass "THAT DAMNED [[Clown Around Town!]]". When Chapter 2 released, the fanbase would almost immediately take a shine to Spamton in the same way that Jevil exploded in popularity upon his introduction, pretty much causing Spamton to dethrone Jevil as the game's most popular Ensemble Dark Horse.
    • Spamton's desire to become both a [[BIG SHOT]] and "real boy" becomes this when the BBC posted an image gallery that featured, among other real-life events, an image of a Spamton cosplayer at Comic Con, and then used this image as the preview for the Twitter posting of that article, causing Spamton to be one of only two major Undertale/Deltarune references in news media.note  Guess he did become a big shot, after all!
  • Jossed: Many fans theorise that the enemy Poppup is inspired by the memetic "Totally not a virus. Trust me...im a dolphin" [sic] icon from the Windows 93 website. However, Poppup's designer Samanthuel Gillson has denied this, stating that she based Poppup on dolphins due to their communicative nature.
  • Love to Hate: Spamton is simply impossible to hate, if the fanbase is anything to go by. Whenever he's not made a Draco in Leather Pants, fans simply enjoy how evil and insane he is, often making him a Memetic Psychopath.
  • Memetic Psychopath: Spamton's Ax-Crazy behavior definitely gives him this status, with most fans turning his Electronic Speech Impediment and general madness up even further than what's portrayed in-game.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Spamton crosses it in the Weird Route when he happily assists Kris and Noelle in the genocide of his own race, all to simply cause enough of a commotion to take over the Queen's palace. Fittingly, while in a normal route, Spamton is largely portrayed as a Tragic Villain, with the player able to battle his normal self, personally talk with him at his shop (where they can see just how much of a broken and tortured soul he is), and learn more about his backstory after his defeat, in the Weird Route, his pre-NEO form only exists as a disembodied voice helping the player keep track of their body count and selling the item that allows Noelle to murder Berdly. While Spamton NEO in the normal route seems to largely run off Blue-and-Orange Morality and tries to redeem himself before transforming into an item, in the Weird Route, he taunts Kris throughout the battle and dies while mocking their attempts to call for help.
  • Realism-Induced Horror:
    • Spamton was praised for the meta-horror surrounding him and how he represents an amusing parody of spambots and their Non Sequitur promisesnote , but what makes him disturbing in the first place is how he scams Kris. While they are already lonely and almost suicidal, Spamton isolates them even more by creating a fake sense of complicity with the teenager to further his goals, always promising and expecting more until he gets what he wants or revealing a more menacing side when he faces refusal.
    • To many players, the most unnerving element of the No Mercy/Weird/SnowGrave route is how Kris (or rather, the player) corrupts the otherwise sweet Noelle into killing enemies by herself. The route also involves Kris insisting on them and Noelle being an item and being outright possessive of her, and then forcing her to do things she doesn't want to, giving the strong impression of an abusive and toxic relationship. Eventually, Kris forces her to kill Berdly (essentially cutting her off from her friend and driving her dependence on Kris even further), which pushes her over the edge. Spamton Slut-Shaming Noelle despite her being the victim is another painfully realistic consequence of this abuse.
  • Self-Fanservice:
    • Spamton's NEO form is a powerful but malformed piece of junk that's held together by strings, its parts hanging loose and swaying back and forth. Many fans however like to apply Rule of Cool and turn him into a much more conventional Mini-Mecha One-Winged Angel, making his armor fit more tightly and adding small details to make it look more than a bunch of shapes doodled in a painting application.
    • The Addisons get this a lot in fanart. In the game, they have very simplistic designs with basic cutout shapes for heads, but fanart often transforms them into smoldering Tall, Dark, and Handsome men with very elaborate hairstyles. Pink Addison is an especially popular target due to having a ponytail and thus being interpreted as a Long Haired Prettyboy.
  • Self-Imposed Challenge: In addition to the usual No-Damage Run challenge, one particular type of challenge became popular after 1.06 and 1.07. Starting in these versions, using the big shot spam glitch pisses Spamton NEO off and makes his attacks hit harder and take more shots to counter. Naturally, people started doing runs where they use the glitch just enough to set him off, and then refraining from using the glitch for the rest of the fight.
  • Signature Scene:
    • Thanks to a mix of his memorably off-kilter characterization, the Surreal Horror surrounding him, and his surprisingly involved character arc (being introduced as a seeming Big-Lipped Alligator Moment before turning out to have a detailed and heavily existential sidequest), every single encounter with Spamton on the normal route can count: his battle in the garbage area, his discussions with Kris in his twisted shop, and his NEO battle (but especially his tragic death if you try to free him).
    • The Normal Route also has Ralsei explaining what opening too many Fountains will do: cause the Roaring. He describes it as a time when the world will plunge into eternal darkness, sending a handful of survivors fleeing and waiting to be hunted down by creatures that only exist to cause chaos. In-universe, it stops everyone in their tracks, including a defeated Queen, before they can open another Fountain.
    • The Weird Route has Noelle snapping under the player's pressure and freezing Berdly in a block of ice, seemingly killing him, namely for its emotional impact and being the culmination of all the horrific things done throughout the Chapter.
  • Song Association:
    • Among fans, Spamton is frequently associated with the Lemon Demon song "One Weird Tip", due to both him and the song being a parody of Internet spam and clickbait ads.
    • In a similar vein, the Weird Route has been heavily associated with Lemon Demon's Aurora Borelalis, with its lyrics focusing on appocalyptic snowfall and an ambigouly toxic lover. Several animatics, PMVs, and MAPs have been made using the song as their basis.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song:
    • Fans have pointed out how "My Castle Town" sounds close to "A Cruel Angel's Thesis", to the point where SiIvaGunner picked up on it.
    • The glitchy piano part in "Until Next Time" bears an uncanny resemblance to the synth line in "Fallen Angel" by Mitsunori Ikeda.
    • "NOW'S YOUR CHANCE TO BE A" shares the same tempo and similar phone ringing effects to "Puppet Boy" by Devo. Fitting, considering Spamton's whole character arc.
    • "A Real Boy!" has a structure and instrumentation that greatly resemble the in-game theme from Bobby Carrot 2: Winterland. The harmony behind sounds nearly identical to Pachelbel's Canon.
    • Parts of "Pandora Palace", such as the opening drum fill and particular melodies in the song, sound similar to "Mission! Health Comes First" ffrom Cells at Work!
  • That One Attack:
    • Sweet Cap'n Cakes' attacks, while not overly difficult in themselves, have a tendency to last a very long time in comparison to nearly every other attack in the game since they're programmed to match up with the rhythm of their battle theme — depriving you of chances to heal in the process. It was so much of an issue that it had to be outright nerfed in a patch, and even then it still lasts a good while.
    • Berdly has an attack where he throws a bunch of paper at you, all graded with an A+. The attack is surprisingly difficult to dodge, given the sheer number of pages you have to dodge at any one time. While all of Berdly's other attacks are fairly well telegraphed, the papers don't give a very clear indication of where each page will go, and the number you have to avoid at any one time means you're very likely to take damage from it. On top of that, Berdly can use it multiple times throughout his battles, meaning it's going to be draining your health very quickly. While he's under the Queen's control in her fight, his tornado attack shoots out in three rows from bottom to top that cover the near entirety of the bullet board and leave little room to dodge the next lot of tornadoes.
    • One of the Werewerewires' attack patterns is the same as a normal Werewire's, but faster. While the attack where they shoot five sparks at once is still fairly easy to avoid, good luck dodging those unevenly distributed triple lasers at a fast rate.
    • Chapter 2 also has one of Spamton's attacks, where he releases a small army of mini-Spamtons across the top and bottom of the box. These will "jump" up or down whenever your heart gets into range, making it tricky to bait them into doing so without getting hit for quite a lot of damage — and to complicate things further, Kris is alone in this battle. Spamton's other two attacks are just as painful, but at least they're far less tricky to avoid.
    • Spamton NEO's second phone hands attack, and to a lesser extent his giant face attack and third heart chain attack, in Chapter 2. All three of these examples force you to dodge bullets from three different sources at once, while simultaneously shooting with the yellow SOUL; while the latter two attacks get significantly easier to dodge the more you shoot at them, the former barely lets up at all until the attack ends.
    • GIGA Queen has two of these, both of them causing an Unexpected Gameplay Change where you're temporarily forced back into a Bullet Hell minigame. One of these attacks has her launch incredibly fast moving homing missles that rain down on you, and the other has her breathe streams of fireballs that rotate back and forth like a metronome with only small gaps in between to dodge the flames. Thankfully, you likely have enough HP to survive both attacks, but still.
  • That One Puzzle: On the path to unlocking the superboss of Chapter 2, Kris rides up a teacup screw only to encounter a lengthy series of laser walls on the way up, touching any of which will drain their health rapidly. It's possible to reach this area before properly encountering damaging obstacles on teacups, and it's a disorienting and tricky dodging sequence no matter what. Given that Spamton NEO is generally considered a drop in difficulty from Jevil, it's even possible that a player may die more times to the teacup ride than they do to the boss fight the ride unlocks.
  • Ugly Cute: Spamton is quite creepy and bears a disconcerting resemblance to Billy the puppet, but many fans nevertheless find him rather adorkable due to his diminutive stature, pitiable circumstances, and distinctive eccentricities.
  • Woolseyism: Spamton's dialogue in the Japanese version is just as, if not more indicative of his status as a shifty salesman. Regarding the salesperson aspect, he refers to Kris with the honorific of "-sama", which Japanese salespeople use to refer to their customers, and he refers to himself with the pronoun "watakushi", which is an antiquated pronoun used to present oneself as formal. On the shady side of things, his text is presented in what Japan considers a "glitchy" format, with the font alternating in its width, and he intermittently sprinkles in English words into his dialogue, including replacing "dai" and "desu" with "die" and "death", or having the "kushi" part of "watakushi" be spelled as 94, with 9 representing misfortune, and 4 representing death.
