- Adorkable: A sweet and kindhearted kid who's a bit of a klutz? Daisuke is definitely this.
- Die for Our Ship: Risa. See Ron the Death Eater below.
- Hilarious in Hindsight: Daisuke and Satoshi really somewhat resemble Shinji and Kaworu. Even better, Satoshi and Kaworu both have been voiced by Akira Ishida, and he looks like a male version of Rei◊ Ayanami, only with shorter hair, glasses and blue eyes.
- Ho Yay: So much of it, it's got its own page.
- Moe: Daisuke. Riku can also qualify as this; she was the winner of the 2003 Saimoe Tournament.
- Narm: In the otherwise decent English dub, Krad has the tendency to scream "Daaaaaaahrk" in a terribly false British accent, really breaking some of the most dramatic scenes in the series.
- Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Mio Hio was this in the anime until Character Development kicked in and her Hidden Depths were revealed.
- Risa in the manga, as she undergoes Character Development and learns to put others' needs and desires before her own fantasies.
- Ron the Death Eater: Risa, due to her initial shallowness, the fact that she "friend zoned" Daisuke due to said shallowness, and the fact that she gets in the way of many of the popular ships.
- The Scrappy: You'd be surprised to find how many fans actually hate Risa more than they do Krad or Mr. Hiwatari. Her development has been slow and her initial selfishness has been hard for some to get over, as she seems unaware of how insensitive she can sometimes be (even though she doesn't really mean to be). (In the manga she gets better, though).
- The Woobie: Satoshi.
- Mio Hio in the anime as well.
