YMMV / Cube×Cursed×Curious

Go To

  • Arc Fatigue: Inverted. Although the adaptation only tries to adapt two arcs, those being pretty heavy in content forces the series to compress things through the episodes, making the anime feel rushed. There's even speculation that the anime was originally conceived as a 24 episode series before it was halfed late in production, which would explain why two different openings and endings were produced for a 12-Episode Anime (something that is almost unheard of).
  • Fridge Logic:
    • When Konoha changes to and from her sword form, her clothes are left behind but she keeps the glasses. It's shown in episode 10 that her glasses are something of a seal to keep her murderous impulses in check.
      • And then in the later volumes, it's revealed that the glasses have become a part of her since long ago and serves as her sheath to hide the blade.
    • Kirika's underwear cannot be removed. Completely, at least. The implications run from chastity to kinkiness to difficulties in other bodily functions.
  • Les Yay:
    • Shiraho and Sovereignty's relationship most certainly has shades of this. Especially because Shiraho likes her female form more.
    • In future novels, a later-introduced character Chihaya develops a crush on Shiraho.
  • Moe: Let's face it, Konoha and Fear are both incredibly moe. Also, Amanda, Kuroe and Sovereignty.
  • Moment of Awesome: Final Volume. Fear combines her two drills into one gigantic drill to shatter Dainsleif. It will have fans of a certain anime cheering for how much it resembles the Giga Drill Break
  • The Scrappy:
    • Konoha, for acting like a cliche Clingy Jealous Girl towards Haruaki. Even in the final arc, when Fear is in risk of dissappearing and becoming a lifeless cube again, she's actually happy at the thought of her being gone. Sure, Fear was clingy too, but eventually warmed up and learned to care about her and others, while Konoha only cared about Haruaki and wanted Fear to die.
    • Also Shiraho, who continues to act aloof and distant towards everyone despite what happened in her arc. Also, every time she comes to help the protagonists, she only does it because they're Sovereingty's friends and she cares about them.
  • So Okay, It's Average: Most viewers considered the 2011 anime nothing more and nothing less than decent, though with some nice touches and a rather good animation (no wonder given that Silver Link is an offshoot of Studio Shaft).
  • Squick: Kotetsu. In the bed with Haruaki. Naked. Due to seeing Harauki brush off the girls' advances, he thinks Haruaki is gay, meaning this was intentional. Get the Brain Bleach.
  • The Woobie:
    • Quite a few characters can fall under this, but the one that best suits this is Sovereignty. Her curse is that her owner will fall in love with her. When that love reaches a certain point, she kills them, and nothing, not even her own will, can stop it from happening.
    • Fear. As if her Dark and Troubled Past wasn't enough, some of the things she has to go through are heart-wrenching. She loses the first underclassman she's gotten close to. She's Driven to Suicide, during the Nurashaaki incident, after going through mental turmoil of Konoha forgetting everyone, and Haruaki single-mindedly attempting to save her by working with Lilyhowell and willing to stain his hands. After managing to lock up almost all her mechanisms, confessing to Harauki, and views positively that together with everyone she can handle anything, the Draconian Commander challenges them, beats the heck out of them, and is about to kill Haruaki, forcing Fear to rely on her Superpowered Evil Side. They manage to escape thanks to her, but in her rampage, she also harmed Haruaki, throwing her into a massive Heroic BSoD. While in that state, she encounters her creator, who is the Dominion Lord of the Knight's Dominion. Since he's the one who formed the organization that want to destroys all cursed tools, naturally, the guy rejects her very existence. The mental and emotional turmoil proves so much that she loses consciousness. If that wasn't enough, you know the indulgence disk that were hyped to be able to lessen her curse, and seal her mechanisms. The explanation isn't wrong, but there's more to it. It goes back to her origins. When he was a mad alchemist, the Dominion Lord made Fear by using other cursed tools as material. Her very life is tied to the power of curses; it acts as her heartbeat. When the final indulgence disk is put in, what acts as her heart will stop functioning, meaning she'll just become a lifeless box. Also, since she actually lives off the power of curses, her curse won't ever be lifted unless this is done. No matter how long she stays at the Yachi home or how many good deeds she does, her curse won't be lifted unless all the indulgence disks are in her. She's learned this too, and is still resolved to have it done just so she won't hurt anyone anymore. Someone give this girl a hug!
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Dainsleif. The fact that she's a cursed blade that willingly works for an organization that destroys her own kind is enough reason to think she has major issues. Unfortunately, we never get to know much about her other than she's one of the original members of the Knight's Dominion.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • The concept of Emulation. Fear is able to fight by using any cube-shaped object to summon her true form. It wasn't specifically stated to be something only she can do. Any weapon or tool type Wathe can do it as long as they have an appropriate medium to summon their true form. Konoha does a makeshift version with her hands and feet, but there's nothing to say she can't summon her blade form by using a bamboo sword or kitchen knife. This could have been used to set up a rival/foil type character for Fear, that uses the same method of fighting.
    • The "curious" in the title. It starts out well enough, with Fear being completely new to living an ordinary life, but in later volumes this all but completely disappears to focus on the harem situation (which by the end still has No Romantic Resolution). It's grating because the author could have explored more adventures for Fear to experience. To make more connections, and experience new things. A deep connection could have been made between her and Un Izoey, because of their similar backgrounds with how they each lived in a bubble (though because of different reasons), until someone they met took them out of it, Honantsu and Pakuaki respectively. However, with the direction the author took, being in the harem limited her character. It shows in her Calling the Old Man Out moment. While epic, her speech shows how much the harem stunted her growth, and even took a few steps backwards. The dialogue mostly contained little things, such as her like for rice crackers and fluffy animals, and making chocolate in volume 5. Her good deeds like saving Chihaya's mom's vegetable garden, having the capacity to cooperate with others, or being able to experience sadness over Yume's death never gets mentioned. What does get mentioned is her love for Haruaki and the others, which the latter was added in embarrassment, but still her true feelings. Also, what steadies her resolve to have the final indulgence disk inserted that will cause her to shut down is her wish to stay by Haruaki's side as one who lifted her curse. While nothing is wrong with that, it comes off as underwhelming, when you consider how it could have been so much more. For example, Fear's reason also could have been to serve as an example like Kuroe was to her, for future sentient cursed tools that come to the Yachi home. Someone like her who was born from curses was able to lift her curse.
