YMMV / Cool Spot

Go To

  • Awesome Music:
  • Breather Level: The sixth level (Radical Rails) is a bizarre superstructure composed of Technicolor Science laboratory equipment, toy car ramps, jack-in-the-boxes, and Groucho glasses, in which there are no enemies or hazards whatsoever. The only way to die is to run out of time.
  • Fridge Brilliance:
    • Spot will die if he falls into regular water, but does just fine in submerged in 7up during the bonus levels: Water dilutes 7up!
    • Spot starts out with 7 hit points. Why? It fits because of the 7up theme.
  • Goddamned Bats: The Dragonflies that attack you in the beach levels. They're fast and move erratically — thus, are difficult to land your shots on — and can rapidly inflict a lot of damage if you don't take them down quickly.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The Game Over screen is a grim experience, especially in the Genesis version. After watching Spot go through his usual slapstick-y death animation, you're then thrust into a scene of a dark, murky-green sea and sky.note  with Spot stood atop the red Game Over text, crying his eyes out as a bleak tune plays.
    • Death by falling in Pier Pressure is surprisingly dark, with the screen suddenly cutting to black as Spot can be heard letting out a terrified scream. Nothing Is Scarier comes into play well here, since it's the only circumstance in which you don't see the usual death sequence — as if an entirely new force has killed him — and can be a nasty surprise after Spot's usual immunity to Fall Damage becomes evident.
  • No Problem with Licensed Games: Thanks to its tight controls, gorgeous animation and presentation, memorable soundtrack composed by Tommy Tallarico and surprising level of difficulty, this one's a classic example of the trope. Of course, it's a given with a sizable chunk of Virgin Interactive's games; said games include three video games based off the Disney Animated Canon that were released on the Genesis during this time.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: Spot Goes to Hollywood (the 32-bit versions, at least) had two stock tracks that sounded similar to famous tracks: "Main Title" by Gregor Narholz is a soundalike to the Jurassic Park theme, while "Ben Hill Benny" by Andrew J.J. Hall is a soundalike to The Benny Hill Show theme.
