YMMV / Coming 2 America

Go To

  • Ass Pull: The reveal that Akeem had slept with another woman while high on drugs before meeting Lisa in the first film comes across as this, especially since this film shows it happened shortly after Akeem and Semmi had met the woman played by Arsenio Hall in drag while the first film seemed to show the two leaving right afterwards and attending the black awareness pageant. Not to mention that Semmi is also implied to have hooked up with his date despite explicitly bemoaning his lack of intercourse since arriving in America in the first movie.
  • Contested Sequel: While almost no one agrees that it's better than the first film, opinions vary on whether it's a funny follow-up with a nice emphasis on family, or an out-of-touch case of Sequelitis relying mostly on Call Backs to the original for laughs.
  • Funny Moments: How does General Izzi train his soldiers? By having them use shake weights to build muscle and play DDR on the hardest difficulty possible.
  • I Knew It!: The trailers were not even subtle; as soon as it was mentioned how all the previous heirs were men, many correctly guessed that the rule would be extinguished and one of Akeem's daughters would take the throne.
  • The Scrappy: Mary. The fact that she's introduced as the character that raped Akeem back in the events of the first movie already doesn't make her the most likeable character. But the fact she's never called out for it, that she constantly acts like she owns the place and most people blame Akeem for the incident make many fans see her as an example of everything wrong with the sequel.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The very fact that Imani may be unhinged after spending three decades barking and hopping like a dog.
  • Signature Scene: The flashback segment scene for its infamy.
  • Tear Jerker: The onscreen passing of King Jaffe Joffer. There's enough celebration and humor in the scene, with it being done during a celebration concert and Joffer announcing his death imperiously, but Akeem's sadness upon witnessing his father going is a grievous sight for anyone who lost a loved parent; despite their conflict, they were still father and son. And to twist the knife further, Akeem bemoans to Semmi afterwards that he has lost the greatest man in his life.
  • Tough Act to Follow: It's not surprising that many people, including the ones who enjoyed the film, say the sequel is not as good as the first one, since the original Coming to America is widely considered a comedy classic.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: The film is bizarrely cavalier about the fact that Akeem was essentially date-raped, with no one seeming to think any less of Mary for it. The fact that she constantly acts like she already owns the place and gloats in front of Akeem's wife and daughters, especially Princess Meeka, about how her son will own Zamunda just exacerbates her character's detestability.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall are de-aged almost perfectly for new scenes set in the 80s.
