YMMV / Chilly Willy

Go To

  • Common Knowledge: Chilly Willy is sometimes confused with Playboy Penguin from Warner Brothers. This happens when people wrongfully remember Playboy's trait of his tears turning into ice cubes as belonging to Chilly instead.
  • Designated Villain: Smedley Dog in several of his appearances. He is trying to prevent Chilly from performing thefts, and other illegal acts. Audiences are supposed to sympathize with Willy, but Smedley isn't actually doing something wrong.
    • In I'm Cold, Smedley is simply trying to prevent Chilly from stealing a fur coat. And when Chilly fails at that, he tries to steal Smedley's tail.
    • In Room and Wrath, Smedley is trying to evict Chilly from his hotel, because Chilly has no money to pay the bill.
    • In Hold That Rock, Smedley is preventing Chilly from demonstrating and selling his noisemakers, firecrackers, buzzers, exploding telephones, etc. Because Chilly is doing his demonstrations next to a rock formation and the slightest noise might cause an avalanche.
    • In Operation Cold Feet. Smedley is protecting the food supplies of his employers from hungry Willy.
    • In A Chilly Reception, Smedley serves as a ship's mascot and Chilly happens to be a candidate for the same position. They both play dirty, but in this case its a choice between luxury and unemployment.
    • In Little Televillain, Smedley is employed by a television producer. He has been instructed not to let anyone disturb his boss, on threat of being fired. Chilly is persistently trying to approach the producer and get an audition.
    • In Robinson Gruesome, Smedley is actually trying to eat Chilly. Because the dog has been stranded on an island for 28 years, with bananas being his only food supply. When Chilly is stranded on the same island, Smedley gets his first chance of eating meat in decades. He does feel a bit guilty but explains: "I feel like a right-down heel and that is the cotton-picking truth. But you know folks, I'M HUNGRY!"
    • In Yukon Have It, Smedley is a officer of the Northwest Mounted Police who obsessively hunts down Chilly. Because of a case of Mistaken Identity. A photo of police applicant Chilly Willy got mixed-up with that of wanted criminal Caribou Lou. Smedley has an Always Gets His Man mentality.
    • In Fish Hooked, Smedley is a guardian at an aquarium. And Chilly decides to go fishing within the aquarium, something explicitly forbidden.
    • In St. Moritz Blitz, Smedley is an an employee at a winter sports' resort. Chilly opens fishing holes all over the ice-skating rink, causing troubles for the staff.
    • In Fish and Chips, Smedley is a watchdog guarding the estate of his master. Including the master's prized trophy fish, a marlin. Chilly gets access to the house and then tries to eat the marlin.
    • In Salmon Loafer, Smedley seems to own a salmon cannery. Chilly breaks in to eat the salmons.
    • In Deep Freeze Squeeze, Smedley and Chilly are the only crew members of a ship, stranded in the Arctic for months. Their food supplies are over. They have asked for a supply airplane, but said airplane drops their supplies in the water. Where the two stranded friends can't reach them. A starving Chilly gets a mad look in his eyes, spending most of the cartoon attempting to eat Smedley. Only in the end does Smedley get a matching craving for eating Chilly.
    • In Half-Baked Alaska, Smedley operates his own snack bar. Chilly can't afford the prices. The penguin at first tries to get a job and earn some money. When he fails, Chilly decides to start stealing food from the snack bar. Getting Smedley in trouble with a rather demanding customer. Smedley makes the point that he can't offer the food for free, because "I can't operate a business on handouts".
    • In Pesty Guest, Smedley is the bell boy at a luxurious hotel, built in the middle of the desert. Chilly has somehow been stranded in the desert and entering is his one chance to escape the heat. But Smedley can not allow it, because it goes against the rules of the establishment.
    • In Snow Place Like Home, Smedley is the caretaker of a mountain lodge. He has to close it for the winter period and make sure no intruders are able to get in. A wandering Chily is trespassing on the property and is determined to use the lodge as his refuge for the winter.
    • In South Pole Pals, Smedley is employed by a zoological society. He has been assigned to capture an Emperor Penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) for the society. He somehow mistakes the diminutive Chilly for a specimen, and gets in trouble with an adult Emperor Penguin who serves as Chilly's protector.
    • In Teeny Weeny Meany, Smedley is employed in a fishing ship. Chilly is attempting to steal the tuna fish that the fishermen have caught.
    • In Operation Shanghai, Smedley is the "one-man crew" of the ship "Old Eyesore", working for the tyrannical Captain Blah. He has to all the work on ship. The Captain instructs him to get a second sailor shanghaied (force-conscripted), allowing for the work-load to be shared. Smedley chooses Chilly as the victim.
    • In Hot Time On Ice, Smedley is employed at an Antarctic weather station. The food supplies are running out, and Smedley is assigned to fly out and transport more supplies. Willy, on the other hand, opens fishing rings on the airport's runway. Preventing any airplane from taking off.
    • In Chilly and the Woodchopper, Smedley is a hotel manager. His only guest at this point is a stressed-out lumberjack, on the edge of a nervous breakdown. Chilly has smuggled himself in the hotel and helps himself to the food. While disturbing the dangerous guest.
    • In Project Reject, Smedley serves at an Antarctic military base. The base commander is looking for evidence for the activities of Unidentified Flying Objects. At the slightest sign of anything peculiar on the sky, he has Smedley fly a jet out to investigate. The base is right next to Chilly's igloo and each take off melts the penguin's home. Which gets Chilly motivated to drive everyone away from his area.
    • In Chilly's Cold War, Smedley is the caretaker to the house of Colonel Pot Shot, a Great White Hunter with a "Hair-Trigger Temper". He is expected to keep the house in pristine condition. His other option is getting shot by his own boss. Then a freezing Willy chooses the house as his new refuge.
    • In Airlift A La Carte, Smedley is the owner of a general store. Chilly and his friend Gooney the "Gooney Bird" Albatross are attempting to get a Five-Finger Discount.
    • In Chilly's Hide-A-Way, Colonel Pot Shot has had enough of the city smog and decides to move back to his mountain lodge. Which he hasn't visited in a decade. Taking Smedley with him to use as a servant. But Chilly had long settled in the lodge and isn't planning to move out.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: In spite of walruses being natural predators of penguins, Wally Walrus and Chilly Willy only starred together in two cartoons from 1961, Clash and Carry and Tricky Trout. It's unknown why the two characters weren't paired more often.
