  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Is Brian just a guy who's been so traumatized by the things he's seen and done that he's just gone into pure survival mode no matter what the cost? Or is he just a selfish, jerkass bully willing to stomp on anything that gets in his way and justifies it with necessity?
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • This movie resonates somewhat with the outbreak of the 2009 swine flu influenza pandemic, which was the virus at that time when the film was releasednote . While the mysterious virus in the film originated from China, the swine flu originated from Mexico, this is a difference.
    • It also resonates Covid-19, which also did spreaded around the world in 2020, and Chinese people being blamed for spreading the virus.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Given the Covid experience, watching the main characters and their brazen "precautions" is hilarious in what the script considers to be "extreme" means an average Joe could take to protect himself from a lethal virus. Especially considering they are months-deep into a far more lethal pandemic.
  • Moral Event Horizon: It's up to the viewer to decide if the group crosses the line, and when. When does the need to survive no longer justify your actions? Should you at least try to be compassionate when making hard choices or should you not even bother? Is refusing to seek a third option smart or heartless?
  • One-Scene Wonder: More than half of the characters, especially The Sole Surviving Scientist and the Crazy Survivalist group at the golf course.
  • Spiritual Adaptation: Probably the closest you'll ever get to an adaptation of Stephen King's Night Surf.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The plot continuously bounces between two modes: "bunch of dumb teens facing a deadly virus" horror comedy and "pragmatic people having to make tough calls in dire situations" drama. Since it can't settle which one it wants to be, it wastes potential of both.
  • The Woobie: Everyone except for some of the survivalists, including all four of the main characters (although Brian is a Jerkass Woobie).
