• Ass Pull: The Vale Secret Service being Yang's mysterious providers of plot-critical intel and resources. Before Oobleck's reveal, there isn't any indication that the story had a crossover element with In the Kingdom's Service. The only small hints are that Yang's contact is named Vincent Saint-Sinclair, or VSS, and that her "friends" are too good at ferreting out secret crimes in progress and sneaking into places.
• Jerkass Woobie: Yang. She spends the whole story fighting an uphill battle against unbearable odds to accomplish her dream and overcome a crippling handicap. In addition, most of her emotional support is lost as her team hides things from her and makes decisions over her head for what they claim is her own good. They also oppose her in her new job every step of the way and unwittingly sabotage her efforts for the first half of the story. On the other hand, she spends a lot of the story lashing out at everyone in response to this and it takes until halfway before she can go a conversation with her old team without practically screaming "BETRAYAL!" at them.
• Hilarious in Hindsight: Mercury jokes in an early chapter that the White Fang are planning a zombie apocalypse. Guess what the climax is.
• Squick: We get a lovely description of Cinder's rotting corpse when Mercury confronts Emerald. It's as disgusting as a rotting corpse of several months would be, made worse by how Emerald has been treating it like Cinder is still alive in spite of this.
