YMMV / CMLL

Go To

  • Broken Base: When Atlantis turned on Mistico, who was the best draw of the decade, he got the expected reaction of boos and hisses, except from the young boys in audience, who continued to cheer for him.
  • Fandom Rivalry
    • Traditionally it was Lucha Libre Internacional/Universal Wrestling Association, then AAA with IWRG being a lesser rival. AAA's fans are not as hostile towards CMLL's as AAA and CMLL's ownership are though, the LLI/UWA thing was opposite, with the owners milking the rival fans.
    • The relationship between NJPW and the rest of the "Japanese Mainstream" with FMW, is mirrored with CMLL's fan base with those of RevoluXion Hardcore and DTU. The fandom seems tolerant of XMW, the one you'd think would be the most vitriolic based on abbreviation alone.
  • Fan Nick Name: Arena Mexico is known as The Citadel Of Lucha Libre.
  • Friendly Fandoms: New Japan and REINA are to be expected but CMLL also has healthy crossover with Pro Wrestling ZERO1.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff
    • The Vampiro Canadiense gimmick was initially presented as a joke but became one of the most popular acts of the 1990s, thanks in part to the luchador's unique look and his good looks. And to think he was previously just a jobber in his native land.
    • While being World Heavyweight Champion in CMLL doesn't mean quite as much in CMLL as it does in other companies, it's still the most prestigious title belt the Canadian known as Steele in CMLL and Val Venis in WWF/E has ever held.
    • In 1999, CMLL tried to establish a base of operations in Japan. After a year, CMLL went back to the drawing board but Ricky Marvin stayed for another 14, mostly in Pro Wrestling NOAH.
    • Love to Hate might be the more accurate term but Shigeo "Anti-Mexico" Okumura is a much bigger star in CMLL than in his native Japan.
    • In his native land, Kazushige Nosawa is best known for being moderately successful on the independent circuit, as a comedy wrestler for All Japan Pro Wrestling and or that guy who got fired from All Japan for stealing a taxi cab while drunk. In CMLL, he's a multitime holder of what may be their most prestigious championship belt, the World Welterweight Title.
    • If TV Tropes were a pro wrestling website, we might have called it Germans love La Sombra. He's scarcely wrestled outside of latin America and yet consistently ranks high on German sites.
    • Most Puerto Rican fans aren't any more into Los Boricuas or Comando Caribeño than the Mexican ones, unless you're talking about Rico Suave or Zeuxis.
  • Growing the Beard: Physically, Hiroshi Tanahashi and Tetsuya Naito had all they needed to be stars in pro wrestling, Naito already was one half of a popular tag team. But it was in CMLL where the developed the charisma and gimmicks that would later make them main event staples.
  • Hype Backlash: After winning the title belt following his controversial entry into the light heavyweight division, fans began to turn on Rush, feeling he was getting pushed because of his body building record rather than his worth as a luchador. Rush and CMLL, for their parts, poked this sore point for all it was worth to turn him into a Hate Sink.
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: Fans told CMLL they wanted Atlantis to main event an Aniversario, but the promotion met some backlash when it kept having Atlantis headline afterwards.
  • Moment of Awesome: Drawing the equivalent of a million USD just from the gate of their 81st anniversary show. This was special because it was after the top draw of the entire nation and the second highest draw in the Americas left CMLL for another country, imploded there and then went to their most immediate rival to rebuild, leaving people skeptical about CMLL's immediate future. And Starcade 86 which preceded it was much more of a collaborative project.
  • Replacement Scrappy
    • Perro Aguayo Jr was popular in AAA but received an unexpectedly negative reaction in CMLL, fans finding him to be far inferior to his father. CMLL would eventually turn this around by gradually having him become a rudo against Atlantis and then making him a tecinco when Los Guapos became his friends.
    • Rather than recall Black Tiger III from Mexico in 2005, New Japan decided to make a Cuban wrestler Black Tiger IV. This resulted in CMLL pushing Black Tiger III to their B shows before phasing him out completely and introducing him as a "new" wrestler called "El Bronco"(an older gimmick itself). Problem was, fans had trouble taking Bronco seriously, basically making him a replacement scrappy to himself.
  • Rooting for the Empire: "Ole, ole ole ole, rudos, rudos!"
  • Stuck in Their Shadow: The first lucador to get the Místico gimmick in CMLL became the biggest star of the decade. When he left, the gimmick was given to Dragon Lee, who wasn't nearly as successful with it. To add insult to injury, the luchador who became the new Dragon Lee ended up being better received than CMLL's first Dragon Lee!
  • X-Pac Heat
    • Rey Mysterio Jr. after being unmasked in WCW, was not greeted well in CMLL until his uncle came up with a loophole that allowed him to put his mask back on.
    • La Sombra got it after unmasking Volador Jr at the 80th anniversary, mostly because it was the result of the two rivals losing a Relevos Suicidas to two much more storied rivals, Ultimo Guerrero and Atlantis. Sombra was the tecnico going into the match but there was some role reversal afterwards.
