Trivia / CMLL

Go To

  • Adaptational Context Change: Universal Studios managed to get the gimmick clause suspended for a November 6th 2008 B Show, where it convinced Rey Bucanero and Damián el Terrible to dress as The Incredible Hulk and the Abomination in a street fight, in mimicry of the 2008 movie. Of course, the movie wasn't a sanctioned contest with crowds, announcers, sign girls, running commentary or an under card.
  • Career Resurrection: He was always seen as a promising wrestler, or at least a promising athlete, but after forgettable runs on the main rosters of the US majors under his birth name of Mark Jindrak, Marco Corleone would finally find stardom here.
  • Defictionalization: Mil Máscaras was originally created for movies but then became a real luchador.
  • Fake Nationality
    • Satoru Sayama was the only member of El Triangulo Oriental who was from the orient, his partners being from Mexico and Panama.
    • It's obvious to most fans that Comandante Pierroth is a Mexican. Less so is that the large majority of Comando Caribeño are not Boricuas either, despite commonly being referred to by their old name, Los Boricuas(many were not from the Caribbean either). Most of the men wearing the El Boricua mask turned out not to be Boricuas either.
  • In Memoriam: No, not the luchador, but things like Mephisto wearing the mask of the deceased Arkangel de la Muerte on the June 15th 2018 Super Viernes.
  • Long Runner: It got started in the Great Depression and has chugged along since
  • Lying Creator: When Damiancito El Guerrero earned the right to work in divisions besides the mini estrellas, CMLL decided to keep him out of the latter for good and announce Ultimo Dragoncito had simply won the mini estrellas belt at some point, without any reference to Damiancito, who simply handed the belt over.
  • Release Date Change: Moved up the date for the 82nd anniversary show only to quickly push it back due to both in person and electronic backlash from the fans.
  • Role-Ending Misdemeanor
    • Reina Jubuki was allowed to wrestle at WCW events without her mask, but when she took advantage of that to take two different spots in the Nitro Women's title tournament (as both Jubuki and as Akira Hokuto without the mask), she was stripped of CMLL's World Women's title. (Some cite WCW's partnership with AAA being the reason however.)
    • While Dr. Wagner Jr claims it was CMLL disliking his public criticism of the company rather than anything he and LA Park did wrong that lead to them leaving the company in 2008, LA Park being announced as part of CMLL's 82nd Anniversary show but getting fired before it happened due to using excessive profanity while insulting the Arena Mexico crowd was definitely a case of this.
    • In May 2017, a video showed up online of the Alvarado familynote  trashing Ultimo Guerrero's sports car in retaliation for him saying that the position of Head of the Wrestler's Union should be decided by vote, not handed to one of them just because the recently deceased Brazo de Oro was previous head. Unsurprisingly CMLL immediately shitcanned most of the family and stripped their titles.
  • Screwed by the Network: Despite cutting blood out of broadcasts and forbidding gimmick matches,Lic. Ernesto Uruchurtu still banned pro wrestling from television while he was mayor of Mexico City. Luckily for E/CMLL, magazines were already established as the main lucha libre medium but television was responsible for CMLL's international boom.
