YMMV / Buffy the Vampire Slayer S2E19 "I Only Have Eyes for You"

Go To

  • Fridge Brilliance: In the original Teacher/Student Romance, Grace is the older, more experienced partner in the couple and James is the younger partner. In all the prior possessions, both people were of the same age or of like social strata within a school environment, but Buffy is so much younger than Angel, Angel was her first boyfriend, and she now has a sworn duty to kill him. Of course Buffy is going to be possessed by James.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The episode concerns an affair between a (young) teacher and a student that ends in a fatal shooting. Depictions of guns in schools have become quite unsettling after Columbine and the Pædo Hunt of the past decade turns what was supposed to be a tragic love story into Squick for many people.
  • He Really Can Act: Joss Whedon first realized David Boreanaz could carry his own show after being wowed by his performance as Grace in this episode.
  • Retroactive Recognition:
    • George the Janitor was played by none other than John Hawkes.
    • James was played by Christopher Gorham aka Henry from Ugly Betty.
  • Values Dissonance: Nowadays, the idea of a young teacher and student feels more squeamish than what’s intended. Though you could argue that was the intention here, as it's a Deconstruction of the Angel/Buffy relationship.
