YMMV / Breadwinners

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: In "From Bad to Nurse", SwaySway when he takes T-Midi's clothes off. If you didn't know SwaySway was just preparing a bath for him, you would be suspicious.
SwaySway: Let's take those clothes off!
  • Alas, Poor Scrappy: People dislike the idea of Kenneth being Buhdeuce's butt, but still feel bad for him being abused by Buhdeuce.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • There is a theory that Breadwinners actually want to kill their friends by feeding them too much bread due to ducks being allergic to bread.
    • In "Unlucky Duckies", Buhdeuce writes in SwaySway's will so he can claim all his things. He actually was disappointed that his best friend didn't die. Perhaps Buhdeuce only befriended SwaySway so he could take advantage of him.
    • In "Rocket Trouble" Ketta nonchalantly tells the Breadwinners she knew the robots would try to replace them. Perhaps she was sick of the Breadwinners messing up so she wanted them to lose their jobs and have more competent workers take their place.
  • Animation Age Ghetto: Some of the positive reviews of the show tend to ignore its flaws on the grounds that it's for children.
  • Awesome Music: What most people seem to agree on is that the background music for the show is very inventive and diverse. From pop tunes, heavy metal, and good old 8-bit stylings, it's good stuff.
    • The theme song.
    • While most dislike SwaySway's creepy crush on Jenny, many still find the songs he sings to her catchy.
    • Oonski's song for hardcore metal fans.
    • Both of the episodes that feature the Pizzawinners tend to have catchy songs accompanying them ("Deliver That Pizza" from "Wrath of the Pizza Lord" being a big one).
    • "The Best Breadwinner".
  • Badass Decay: In Season 1, SwaySway is an ace pilot who is confident and goes through action sequences to save the day from his and Buhdeuce's mistakes. But Season 2 has less of this and often shows him as a target of slapstick or his own insecurities a lot more often.
  • Bizarro Episode: "Bye Bye Booty" is a weird episode even for Breadwinners. Buhdeuce's butt is sentient. Also Buhdeuce promises his butt he will never take him for granted again, but he never mentions what happened in future episodes.
    • The episode before it "Flock Collecting" is weird too, there are sentient rocks, despite the only sentient objects in other episodes being gag characters.
  • Broken Base: Some find the show crude and poorly animated. Others find the humor isn't too bad (some claim it's even better than fellow Nicktoon Sanjay and Craig, but that's a debate in of itself) and is actually pretty charming in its own right.
  • Critical Backlash: Browsing the internet will tell you this is the worst cartoon of all time, resulting in many claiming that the series is better than what people say about it. Even Mr Enter who used to be one of this show's harshest critics thinks that while the show isn't that great, there were worse Nick shows that came before and after this one.
  • Designated Hero: In the same vein as many other modern Nickelodeon protagonists, the titular Breadwinners are another pair of clueless jerks in general — wildly destructive and causing naught but trouble everywhere they go through a combination of their shared obnoxiousness and general stupidity. Some episodes will have them realize this and try to make amends (particularly if they antics involve Ketta, Jelly, or T-Midi), but most episodes don't.
  • Draco in Leather Pants: T-Midi certainly isn't evil, but he as done some horrible things to the Breadwinners, such as imprisoning a loaf they saw as their child, forcing them to fight against their will, and yelling at their pet frog. However, a small number of people believe T-Midi is just a poor soul who the Breadwinners torment.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
  • Fanon Discontinuity: Virtually the entirety of "Love Loaf" is considered by many people and even genuine fans of the show to be unwatchable because they think the entire plot is essentially SwaySway attempting to commit date rape on Jenny Quackles, who, due to the fact that SwaySway has a job and Jenny's still young enough to go to summer camp, may be significantly younger than him. In particular the moment when he tries to shove the titular Love Loaf into Jenny's mouth with a manic, almost psychotic look in his eyes is generally considered to be extremely disturbing.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Fans prefer to ship SwaySway with Ketta. Even though neither Ketta nor SwaySway have ever shown any feelings towards each other beyond friendship and SwaySway loves Jenny Quackles.
  • Fridge Horror: Bread is actually harmful to ducks. This whole show is literally about ducks eating bread.
  • Friendly Fandoms: Some of Breadwinners' few fans also enjoy Sanjay and Craig.
  • Growing the Beard: The remake of the original short on Nickelodeon's website has improved animation and voice acting.
  • Ho Yay: In "The Brave and the Mold" Buhdeuce is compared to SwaySway's ancestors who all were married couples. Buhdeuce blushes afterwards.
  • Jerkass Woobie:
    • Zoona and Roni are extreme jerks to the Breadwinners. However they had a lot of pressure put on them by their boss the Pizza Lord.
    • T-Midi has sympathy from some people due to being bothered by the Breadwinners all the time.
    • Lava Mole is seen as this in universe. He is reduced to tears after being beaten by the Bread Maker so many times.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Among what fans it does have, many are interested in checking it out due to it being one of Robbie Daymond's only western animation roles.
  • Memetic Molester: In "Love Loaf", SwaySway uses the titular loaf to get Jenny to love him. But haters take it a step further by saying he'll do unspeakable things to her.
  • Memetic Mutation: A couple jokes were cracked on Twitter around the 2018 Oscars relating to both this show and The Breadwinner.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
  • An episode involved T-Midi trying to eat a particular type of bread that everyone else treated as if it was sentient. A series Mumsy portraits in his house foreshadowed this by showing Mumsy pleasantly posing with some bread before the paintings start to become increasingly creepy as they culminate in Mumsy preparing to eat the bread while having a deranged looked on her face.
  • The episode "Love Loaf" revolves around Sway Sway trying to get Jenny Quackles to fall in love with him by getting her to eat the titular love potion bread. The Unfortunate Implications and Nightmare Faces Sway Sway makes as he is trying to force Jenny to eat the Love Loaf are... unsettling.
  • Quirky Work: Does a series about two ducks who love shaking their asses and delivering bread on a planet made of bread sound like a normal, day-in-the-life series to you?
  • Retroactive Recognition:
    • Sway Sway's voice actor happens to be the same one who plays main protagonist Sorey in Tales of Zestiria. Considering that actor had relatively few large roles before that game's debut, some people went and looked into Breadwinners just to see his performance in the cartoon.
    • Two of the main recurring writers for the show were Bill Motz & Bob Roth. They later went on to create the critically acclaimed The Ghost and Molly McGee for Disney Channel.
  • Ron the Death Eater: While Sway Sway and Buhdeuce are not the most selfless individuals, the haters make them out to be pure evil.
  • Rooting for the Empire: Rambamboo is considerably more popular than any other character, probably due to being the sole person who opposes the rather annoying Breadwinners and is one of the few sane characters. However, Flanderization has made her more insane and power-abusing.
  • Self-Fanservice: Ketta and Rambamboo are completely flat-chested, but in a lot of fanart they have breasts.
  • Squick: Jelly licking Buhdeuce's butt.
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!:
    • Two Funny Animals with a bromance theme going on for them? Insert the cries of many people bemoaning it as a The Amazing World of Gumball and Regular Show knock-off (and to a lesser extent, Fanboy and Chum Chum).
    • Two brothers in a rocket vehicle delivering stuff in an alien world was also done in The Brothers Flub. They also have similar episodes such as "Double Feature" and "Big Screen Buhdeuce". Guapo and Buhdeuce both ditch Fraz and SwaySway for fame.
  • Viewer Species Confusion: Buhdeuce and Sway-Sway hardly look like ducks. They're often mistaken for frogs.
  • The Woobie:
    • Buhdeuce in “Employee of the Month”. He works himself to the bone to prove he’s worthy of the title, and he even harms himself to prove his endurance.
    • SwaySway too. While most people find his crush on Jenny creepy, those who believe Jenny is the same age as him feel bad for the poor guy. He is reduced to tears when he can't confess to Jenny or she goes out with another guy.
