YMMV / Beverly Hills Chihuahua

Go To

  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Delgado and Chloe. Some fans preferred them together rather than Papi/Chloe, due to having more screen-time together in the first film.
  • Fridge Brilliance: "Delgado" means "slim" in Spanish, which makes a lot of sense when one considers that he's a rugged hero type that wouldn't be out of place in a western. Well... other than the fact that he's a dog.
  • Funny Moments: Chloe jumping off a train and onto Delgado's back.
    Chloe: Oh, my gosh!
    Delgado: Oh, my back!
    • Chloe swimming in the lake and going over a waterfall. She expresses nothing but joy.
Chloe: Do you see that, Delgado, I was swimming!
Delgado: Oh, yeah, you are a real Aquatic goddess.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Everything about El Diablo. A vicious trained Doberman hunting down a tiny rich Chihuahua.
    • Vasquez willing to try to kidnap and possibly kill Chloe all for the ransom money meant for her due to her riches.
    • When El Diablo growls, barks and howls as he stalks after Chloe.
    • Delago and Chloe being cornered helplessly by the mountain lions with no escape.
    • How El Diablo attacked Delgado causing him to lose his sense of smell and murder his human partner off-screen no less. A human being murdered by a trained Doberman.
    • The illegal underground dog fight scenes, complete with numerous dogs held in cages and Chloe being pitted against El Diablo. A Chihuahua being pitted against a Doberman, there's no way she'd win.
    • When El Diablo mysteriously disappears with a growl after just being defeated by Delgado, only to return in the film's sequel to threaten the lives of his children.
  • Sequelitis: Despite poor reception at the box office, the film got to spawn two sequels, which contain different actors and some of the same actors from the first film.
  • Special Effect Failure: Chloe plays the piano for the talent portion of the dog show in the second movie. We cut to her paws on the keyboard while she's clearly pressing the keys out of sync with the song she's playing.
  • So Bad, It's Good: While there's a bit of a Broken Base regarding whether the first movie is this or not, the sequels most definitely qualify.
  • Tainted by the Preview: The movie received a lot of hatred thanks to its teaser trailer with the infamous ear worm.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Chloe being lost and homesick in the first film.
    • Papi thinking he's lost Chloe in the first film.
    • Delago's anguished "You took everything from me!" to El Diablo when he defeats him in the first film.
    • Delago having to give up his two sons up for adoption to the police station to keep them safe in the 2nd film.
