YMMV / Beowulf & Grendel

Go To

  • Narm:
    • The priest's line about how the Danes have "one hand on the sword... and the other one on the dick!" comes sandwiched between Beowulf's love scene and the Sea Hag's appearance, just ruining the dramatic timing of both. The average viewer will probably still be laughing at the sheer Mood Whiplash when the terrible monster makes her first kill.
    • Some of the film's monster imagery is just too weird and B-movie-esque to be taken seriously. Young Grendel is already hilarious for being, well, a bearded child, but his mother takes the prize for being essentially an extra-tall old woman with claws and bizarrely muscled legs.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: It can be sensed that this film doesn't really know what kind of adaptation it wants to be. The monster is explained as a surviving caveman, but his mother is still a fantasy monster; there's a lot of effort to realistically portray the historical setting, but the locations and sets are completely different from what they should be; and there's an emphasis on the time and place's politics, but the story is quite uneventful and has long chunks of time where nothing happens. If only the film had gone either full Demythification or full Heroic Fantasy, among the many options they had, it would have been certainly a much better product.
