YMMV / Bastille

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Of the music video for "Happier": are the lyrics in context about the girl trying to comfort her dog, or about the dog deciding it has to die in order for her to move on and make real friends? And at the end she did give her own daughter a dog as a gift, or did she did it to subject her to the same sort of suffering she went through?
  • Broken Base:
    • "Happier" is a very contentious topic. Many Bastille fans are unhappy that this, along with "Pompeii", are the only two Bastille songs most people know. This frustrates them, as it is often considered to be generic, without Bastille's usual style. On the other hand, many other fans believe that the song has its own merits, as a potent Tear Jerker, and that it will help bring more attention to Bastille's other songs.
    • Similarly, some fans do not like the hip-hop-esque collaborations on their mixtapes, but other fans appreciate the experimentation.
  • Covered Up:
    • "What Would You Do?" was originally by City Highs.
  • Friendly Fandoms: Several, thanks to their many collaborations.
    • With Death Cab for Cutie after Dan complimented them in a shared gig.
    • With Craig David after their collaboration, "I Know You." Many fans who came for one found themselves becoming fans of the other.
    • With P!nk after Dan's surprise appearance in Pink's performance of "Learn to Love Again" at the Brits.
  • Funny Moments: The "Bad Decisions" music video, featuring Dan in a poorly fitting suit, ugly wig, and mustache hamming it up for the camera in an infomercial, in between portraying multiple characters killing each other.
  • Growing the Beard: Critics gave Wild World and Doom Days better reviews than Bad Blood, largely because critics felt that they only developed a distinct sound from other British indie rock bands during their second album.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Several songs are very sweet.
    • "Glory", in which the singer's girlfriend reminds him that they can have a beautiful life here on earth, without "looking up to heaven".
    • "Laughter Lines" has a very sweet case of Grow Old with Me, enhanced by whistling and violins.
    • "Happier" is a Tear Jerker, but it's also kind of sweet that the singer handles his breakup maturely rather than allow his relationship to turn into something bad like in other songs.
    • "Poet", in which the singer pays homage to an unattainable woman by writing songs about her.
    • "4 AM", a song about the sweet friendship among several clubbers. "Oh there is nowhere I would rather be..."
    • "Joy", one of their most straightforwardly sweet songs about recovering from a hangover.
    • "The Anchor," which is about a person in the singer's life who drowns out the stressful "noise" of the panicky news media and salvages his mental health.
  • Memetic Mutation: In 2020, there was a proliferation of videos showing countries disappearing from the map accompanied with the chorus of "Pompeii".
    • This further evolved in 2021 into the meme of, "But If You Close Your Eyes", where the line from "Pompeii" is used alongside a transitional comparison between two sets of characters and/or scenes to show that they're either almost identical, or to satirically point out how they're almost nothing alike, but people still view them as such regardless.
    • But if you close you eyes...EMOTIONAL DAMAGE! EMOTIONAL DAMAGE! EMOTIONAL DAMAGE! EMOTIONAL DAMAGE!
  • Retroactive Recognition: Bastille collaborated with Lizzo in "Torn Apart, part 2" from Other People's Heartache, part 3 from 2014, long before Lizzo became famous.
  • Signature Song: "Pompeii" is by far Bastille's most popular song. "Happier" has been a sizable hit, but is often more associated with Marshmello and is not seen as representative of Bastille's style.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!:
    • Many fans were not happy with the new versions of "Grip" and "The Descent" on Other People's Heartache Pt. 4. It doesn't help that the original versions of the songs are very hard to find. This has lessened somewhat after they finally released the original of "Grip" as an "alternative" version.
    • "Million Pieces" is a weird case. The original version was made in 2018, but not released yet. To tease this song, a Softer and Slower Cover was sampled in the version of "The Descent" on Other People's Heartache Pt. 4, which was itself quite divisive. This teaser was very well-received, and many fans were anticipating it a great deal on Doom Days. However, once the song was released, some fans found they did not like the upbeat version of "Million Pieces" and preferred the teaser. Many fans who prefer the teaser, and even some who prefer the regular version, have called for Bastille to release a full version of "Million Pieces" in the style of the teaser.
