Tear Jerker / Bastille

  • "Happier" as a song is a bit of a ball-twister by itself, being about the musings of breaking a relationship for the sake of the happiness of both parties. The video, however, makes it much worse by being about a lonely girl whose only friend is a dog - who is then euthanized. The stripped version is even worse, removing the flourishes and only leaving Dan's depressed singing and bleak guitar and piano.
  • "Laughter Lines", a song about a couple's love over many years, is an incredible tear jerker. The violins don't help.
  • "Oblivion", which appears to be about losing a loved one to dementia.
  • "Good Grief" talks about the pain of losing a loved one and is worsened by the happy, catchy tune.
  • "Sleepsong", a lamentation of people who close themselves off from others.
  • "Overjoyed", their first song, which is about trying to help a friend with depression. Unlike some of Bastille's later bombastic songs, this one is very pared-down, enhancing the sadness.
  • "Icarus", about a young alcoholic. "Icarus's life has only just begun..."
  • "Four Walls" is a mature and sophisticated exploration of the death penalty. It notes there is no right way to deal with terrible people, and laments how murderers have wasted their lives.
  • "Doom Days". With discussion of cult mentality, internet addiction, climate change, and so many other problems in the world, it just sounds so hopeless.
