- Aluminum Christmas Trees: Some of the drinking hijinks among the students may come off as improbable to some viewers. They are, however, based on the director's daughter's anecdotes of her own drinking escapades and some of the students featured in these scenes are her own classmates. Those who have attended a Danish gymnasium will likely be able to corroborate the authentic, if heightened, nature of these scenes.
- Award Snub: The Academy Awards saw Thomas Vinterberg earn a surprise nomination for his direction, but aside from an International Film nod (which it wound up winning), it was otherwise ignored. In particular, many felt that Mads Mikkelsen should have been nominated for Best Actor.
- Do Not Do This Cool Thing: Though the film does a strong job showing the very negative effects of our main characters' actions, before things go wrong, they sure look like they're having a great time. Indeed even after the shit hits the fan, they still show that drinking can be enjoyable and even useful despite it's dangers.
- He Really Can Act: Mads Mikkelsen's acting abilities have never been in doubt, but many unfamiliar with his past were surprised at his absolutely fantastic dancing.
- Signature Scene: The ending scene where Martin dances once again, showing Mads Mikkelsen's still got it.
