YMMV / Anime-Gataris

Go To

  • Epileptic Trees: With the show drenching itself in anime tropes as much as it talks about them, especially after the slow bleed of the 2D realm into the 3D realm, some fans were wondering if Gataris was actually the sequel to the original theater shorts. Erika being a teen instead of in college could be chalked up to reality rewriting her to be young enough for the typical audience to relate to.
  • Everyone Is Jesus in Purgatory: The troperiffic nature of the show following the Wham Episode and the 2D world beginning to take over the real world has led to many fan interpretations, from being a vision of the future to symbolizing an Otaku becoming consumed by his addictions to the point of not being able to tell what is real and what is not anymore.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: While the meta references were well liked by the American viewerbase, the Japanese audience found it less interesting than the previous episodes of the series, with viewership peaking and dropping around episode 7.note
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • This love letter to anime and all of its tropes was released on the centennial year of Japanese Animation itself. When reality starts breaking down, the world even starts taking on styles and conventions of the anime of yesteryear.
    • Turns out PreFae did get officially brought over to the US— but instead of keeping its original Japanese name, it changes from its literal translation to Glitter Force.
    • A family of identical lazy siblings with the last name Nakano? As of the end of 2016, Mitsuteru's home situation isn't so special anymore.
    • Remember when Miko mentions that she didn't ship 3D yet made an exception for Kai and Nakano? She only has to worry about one of them now, since Nakano was an anime character to begin with. And eventually they all become anime characters in the last few episodes.
  • Sequel Displacement: More like a prequel displacement for Anime Gatari. A bit justified though, since it's not that hard to become more popular than your predecessor work when the previous installment was only shown in one theater.
  • Slow-Paced Beginning: One of the main criticisms of the series: until the Wham Episode, the series is a by-the-book school club anime with only loads of references distinguishing it from anything else in that genre. By the time shit hits the fan and the series is revealed to be about stopping anime from bleeding into and taking over the real world, many had already dropped or tuned out.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: May be invoked on the series' part; various OST tracks from other anime have clear influence in the OST for Gataris. For example, while Minoa and Arisa are handing out fliers in bunny costumes, the track used for it sounds very similar to Haruhi Suzumiya's "Oi Oi Oi".
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Many fans were expecting a live-action sequence of sorts about the characters entering the real world. It's too bad that that never happened.
