- Harsher in Hindsight:
- Siegfried delivers a lecture on the evils of smoking to Tristan, shouting that he will smoke himself to death. Brian Sinclair, the inspiration for Tristan, died of lung cancer in 1988.
- Mrs. Hall tearfully sending James off to fight in the war is a Tear Jerker in and of itself, but when you factor in that this is the last scene with her as Mary Hignett passed away a few months after it aired and Mrs. Hall was said in the 1983 special to have passed away while they were away...
- Hilarious in Hindsight: Patrick Troughton makes a guest appearance in "Hair of the Dog", opposite Peter Davison. One of many times the Doctors crossed over. Also, Nicholas Courtney appears in "Matters of Life and Death".
- Retroactive Recognition:
- Peter Davison, who played Tristan Farnon, is better known nowadays as the Fifth Doctor.
- Harry Potter fans will recognize Siegfried as Cornelius Fudge.
- Angela Mortimer from "Hampered" is played by Chloƫ Annett, who would later be best known for playing the second Kochanski in Red Dwarf.
- Kit Bilton from "Pups, Pigs and Pickle" is played by Gorden Kaye, who would later be best known for playing René Artois in 'Allo 'Allo!.
- Horace from "Home and Away" is played by Jack Haig, who would later be best known for playing the first LeClerc in 'Allo 'Allo!.
- Mr. Beresford from "Charity Begins at Home" and "Every Dog His Day..." is played by Kenneth Waller, who would later be best known for playing Old Mr. Grace in Are You Being Served? and Grandad in Bread (1986).
- Ned Finch from "Every Dog His Day..." is played by Robin Parkinson, who would later be best known for playing the third LeClerc in 'Allo 'Allo!.
- The Woobie: Life can be awfully cruel to James sometimes.
